Dr. Wendi Yamashita- "Carceral Entanglements: Gendered Public Memories of Japanese American World War II Incarceration"
Dr. Wendi Yamashita, Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies at Sacramento State, will discuss her newly published book, Carceral Entanglements: Gendered Public Memories of Japanese American World War II Incarceration. In this talk, she will highlight a chapter exploring the relationship between Indigenous groups and Manzanar stakeholders, emphasizing the interconnectedness of colonial and carceral violence in Owens Valley, CA. Dr. Yamashita will also explore the coalition formed between the Manzanar Committee, the Big Pine Paiute, Bishop, Fort Independence Paiute, and Lone Pine Paiute-Shoshone Tribes, as well as local residents, to oppose the proposed destruction of the valley by the LADWP.
The talk will take place on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM in SPA-210. The speaker will attend virtually.
