Marie A. Kelleher, The Hungry City

Dr. Marie A. Kelleher (1970-2024) was a Professor in the Department of History from 2003-2024 who taught classes on medieval gender history and the Mediterranean medieval world. Her recent book, The Hungry City: Food, Famine, and a Year in the Life of Medieval Barcelona, was published in January 2025 with Cornell University Press. The Hungry City explores the city of Barcelona through the lens of a single year—the 1333-1334 famine. Dr. Kelleher’s analysis of the food systems and human relationships that shaped the medieval city provides a dynamic new perspective on the history of Barcelona.
