BSBME Accreditation

Mission Statement

Consistent with both the missions of California State University, Long Beach and the College of Engineering, the mission of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at CSULB is to serve the university, and the broader academic and non-academic communities through education, research, and scholarly activities in a diverse, inclusive, student-centered environment.

Program Educational Objectives

The Biomedical Engineering Program objectives are to produce graduates that:

  1. Serve as highly skilled biomedical engineers in healthcare institutions, academia, and industry at regional, state, national and international levels.
  2. Recognize the necessity of open and inclusive learning environment that promotes intellectual growth and lifelong learning, including entering and succeeding in advanced degree programs in STEM fields.
  3. Foster personal and professional success with commitment to ethical and social responsibility, both as individuals and in team environments through effective communication.
  4. Perform as professionals who employ their fundamental and broad knowledge in BME and technical skills to determine innovative and practical solutions to meet the current, merging, and future societal challenges.

Student Outcomes

The Biomedical Engineering student learning outcomes “1-7” are consistent with those suggested by ABET.

  1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
