Singapore and Malaysia Fall 2024 - CBA494A Short-term Study Abroad

A group of 18 students from the College of Business, led by Dr. Ming Chen, Director of the International Business Program, participated in this year’s short-term study abroad program in Singapore and Malaysia. The program began with class meetings on campus during the fall semester and culminated in a week-long trip in January. During the Long Beach fall sessions, students explored both countries' cultures and business practices through readings, group presentations, and discussions. The group traveled to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital and largest city, from January 8 to 15, 2025.

Five Company Visits

The trip featured five company visits alongside various social and cultural activities. In Singapore, the group toured Emerson, a Fortune 500 company with diverse operations in engineering, manufacturing, and automation; Ecolab, a global leader in sustainability offering water, hygiene, and infection prevention solutions; and the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce, the country’s oldest independent business association, established in 1837. In Kuala Lumpur, the group visited SD Guthrie, one of the world’s largest producers of certified sustainable palm oil, and St. Regis, a luxury hotel chain, owned and managed by Marriott International.

Cultural Highlights

In addition, the group explored numerous cultural sites and landmarks across both countries. In Singapore, they visited Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay, Supertree Grove, Cloud Forest, Flower Dome, Chinatown, Merlion Park, and Sentosa. In Kuala Lumpur, their itinerary included Batu Cave, King’s Palace, Merdeka Square, the National Mosque of Malaysia, Central Market, Thean Hou Temple, Petaling Street, and the iconic Twin Towers.

The trip provided students with first-hand insights, enhancing their understanding of cultural differences and business practices in the ASEAN region. It also exposed them to a range of business opportunities and potential career paths.
