Novel chemical transformations provide means for accessing new and diverse scaffolds thus opening uncharted chemical space relevant to medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, and drug discovery. They also allow for a shorter, more efficient, and overall accelerated synthesis of natural products and other complex molecules. This seminar will showcase several multicomponent synthetic protocols that employ "traditional" organic chemistry reagents and organometallic complexes. The optimized methods were successfully utilized in efficient synthesis of interesting and biologically active compounds and natural products.

metal-mediated synthetic transformations
Fig. The figure presents logical steps necessary in the development of new, metal-mediated synthetic transformations. Negishi's reagent "Cp2Zr" has been employed in a three-component coupling sequence of alkenes/alkynes, lithium carbenoids, and electrophilic reactants (for example aldehydes and ketones) to give diverse molecules such as: a) bicyclic compounds as modulators of orphan nuclear receptors, b) homopropargyl alcohols as prospective building blocks, and c) mucosin as eicosanoid natural product.

Seminars are held on Wednesdays at 4:00pm. All are invited to attend.
