Matthew Caswell
Growing up in Downey, CA I knew of LB State not only because it was just down the 605 Freeway, but because two of my three siblings attended the university. When it was time for me to decide where I would attend college, Long Beach had already made its imprint on me. Ever since I was a child I have wanted to be a police officer like my father. Then when I started college I knew I wanted to focus on something that involved helping others. So while I studied Criminal Justice, I also applied to the President’s Ambassadors Program. Through this program I was given the opportunity to speak with city leaders, serve the community, and mature to become a more professional student, all the while getting to know President Jane Close Conoley.
While I was a Resident Assistant I was given the opportunity to study abroad in Europe. Although it was far away from home I decided to take a semester to see what another part of the world is like. From that experience I caught what some call “the travel bug” and have flown to other parts of the US and Asia. Any chance I get to travel somewhere, I will take it.
Currently I am a Professional Student Worker with the Los Angeles Port Police. This position was presented to me through guidance and motivation by the Criminal Justice Department. While working in this position I hope to learn more about Law Enforcement and ways I can protect my community and country.
After graduation I hope to work in Law Enforcement either for a municipality or the government. I would like to travel to many more countries in Europe and eventually visit other continents of the world. Hopefully my travels will do me well in the future for an anti-terrorism unit within law enforcement. I can’t say I know for sure where I will be in ten years, but rest assured I will be well prepared for it thanks to all the friendships, professors, and experiences I had at Long Beach State. Go Beach!

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” –Benjamin Franklin
“The Christian shoemaker does his Christian duty not by putting little crosses on the shoes, but by making good shoes, because God is interested in good craftsmanship.” –Martin Luther
Favorite Professor: Dr. Alice Choi. Dr. Choi is filled with so much knowledge and she is so great at passing on that information to her students in a way that can be easily understood. She is genuinely interested in the success and development of her students. And she has provided me with irreplaceable support and guidance during my time at Long Beach State.
Favorite Class: Constitutional Criminal Procedure
Favorite Spot on Campus: Besides all of the beautiful architecture, landscape, and art around campus, one of my favorite spots on campus is the Science Learning Center. I came in contact with the Professor Jim McKibben, the Center’s supervisor, while giving a tour to a class from an elementary school. It was wonderful watching the kids enjoy all of the interactive science equipment. It reminds me of the field trips I took when I was in elementary school. Plus it is a great break between classes.
