I can’t imagine having a better college experience. Going to college in the 60s was the best. Some of my best friends today were those I met in College. I had a baseball scholarship to Santa Clara and a football scholarship to Stanford. Long story but I ended up at LBSU. I played football and baseball and joined a fraternity…SAE.
Mostly sports-related. Playing two sports, studying and moving between lower campus and upper campus put a strain on my “fun meter”. Being on the first baseball team to go to the NCAA playoffs and the first football team ever ranked in the top 10 was very special. Playing football at Vets Stadium in front of over 25,000 people (still a record today) and being recognized everywhere you walked on campus was very exhilarating, to say the least.
Most of the events I was playing football or baseball. 49er days was all scheduled around an athletic event…I was on the field.
Other than the gym on lower campus because I had to be there it was the SAE table in the cafeteria. All the pretty coeds hung around the table!
Dr. Huggins was going to give me a D in history. I guess I didn’t think athletes need to go to class. He gave me a second chance and it really made a strong impact on me. Dr. Nelson in English Literature as well as my Economics teacher (Became an econ major).
I learned how to learn. The discipline it took to figure things out on my own. The team concept of college football and baseball also helped in life. I owe everything to my college prepping me for the real world.
Got advanced degrees from Notre Dame and the University of Michigan and opened my own insurance brokerage operation. Contracted with Mass Mutual as well and developed a life insurance practice.
Still working and traveling.
