A first-generation college graduate, Gregory Lowell Whitaker says his parents, Fredrick and Susan, stressed the importance of higher education and the values of perseverance and resilience. The depth and breadth of his academic pursuits ultimately led to an extraordinary, globe-spanning career in medicine. After earning his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from CSULB — he was deeply involved with the University Scholar’s Program Association during his four years — Whitaker went on to become a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a post-graduate residency training in anesthesiology at The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine, Knoxville, where he was chief resident. He currently serves as a consultant anesthesiologist with Greater Anesthesia Solutions, Arizona’s leading anesthesiology provider. Of all his professional accomplishments, Whitaker says he is proudest of his deployment to Iraq as a U.S. Army Medical Corps officer, where he served with various trauma resuscitation teams, and his time at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York in spring 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Whitaker is “eternally grateful” for his undergraduate experience, which, he says, “provided the foundation for all my subsequent medical education,” and looks forward to continuing to “support all efforts to facilitate the growth and well-being of CSULB students.”
