Certificate – Mathematics Instructional Specialist (MIS)

Mathematics Instructional Specialist (MIS) Certificate

 

The Mathematics Instructional Specialist (MIS) Certificate program provides a purposeful, interrelated, and developmentally designed sequence of four courses (12 units). These courses include clinical practice experiences, allowing candidates to work with diverse learners. Candidates will be able to demonstrate mathematical pedagogical content knowledge and skills to support effective mathematics instruction and student learning through a number of innovative, collaborative activities, assignments, fieldwork, and technology applications designed to exemplify how math education can be exciting and culturally relevant for a wide range of K-8 learners.

 

Certificate Requirements

The candidate must meet the coursework requirement of four courses for the MIS Certificate program, and resolve any conditions of admission before being recommended for the MIS certificate.

 

The candidate is required to complete the following four courses:

  • EDME 501 Assessment in Teaching and Learning Math (3)
  • EDME 503 Advanced Math Methods in Teaching, 1 (3)
  • EDME 504 Advanced Math Methods in Teaching, 2 (3)
  • EDME 520 Algebra: Research-Based Pedagogy (3)

 

Admission Requirements

Prior to admission, candidates for the Mathematics Instructional Specialist (MIS) Certificate must hold a bachelor’s degree and have a valid CA teaching credential that authorizes them to teach English learners.

 

Specifically, a candidate needs to meet the following admission criteria:

 

  1. Online Application: Submit an online application.
  2. Official Transcripts: Provide office transcripts from your bachelor’s degree and teacher preparation program(s), along with any other relevant post-baccalaureate transcripts.
  1. Teaching Credential(s): Have valid California Teaching Credential(s) or CTE Clear Credential. This includes the MSCP Credential, Single Subject Credential in Foundational Level Mathematics, and/or Full Single Subject Credential in Mathematics.
  2. Mathematics Coursework: Successfully complete (with a grade of C or better) at least 8 units of mathematics content coursework specifically designed for K-8 teachers or post- secondary coursework in mathematics.

  3. English Learner Authorization: Include a copy of the English Learner Authorization issued by the CCTC.

 

Certificate Recommendation

 

  1. Coursework Requirement: Meeting the coursework requirement for the MIS Certificate Program.

  2. Admission Conditions: Resolving any conditions of admission.
