I went to the United States in 1975 as a refugee. I had to start over and the committee there evaluated my background and education from my home country and gave me some credit for it. I worked as a security guard and then went to school part-time at night. It was a tough time, but I made it. I was able to take classes that were flexible with my work schedule and I was able to get an education and a career as an engineer. I enjoyed my time at Long Beach and it prepared me for life after graduation. It also helped me build relationships with people. I ended up working for the government and got great benefits, medical insurance, pension, and social security. I'm glad I was able to make it through and get the education I needed.
