Numbers can bolster any article that you are writing.  Here are some sources for a variety of statistics.
U.S. Statistics: Demographics
The following web sites and books are just a selection of sites and titles available for finding data about people in the United States
GENERAL STATISTICS
 
Census 2000 data
Reports will be released in phases.  Check often for new updates to currently available Census 2000 information.
 
Statistical Abstract of the United States
Available in Print:  REF HA202 (latest edition at the Ref Desk)
Available on the Internet: Statistical Abstract of the U.S.
This is a primary source for U.S. statistical information for a variety of different topics including health, business, birth rates, housing and more.
 
County and City Data Books
This site is maintained by the University of Virginia.   It allows you to select specific data regarding cities and counties all over the US and generate custom tables.  This site takes its data from the Census so the most recent information available is 1994 until they add 2000 Census data.  One of the easiest ways to get all the statistics about LA County you need!

This publication provides a mix of statistics regarding American consumers.  It includes high school dropout rates, projections of college enrollment, health and exercise rates, income and spending trends and living arrangements.
 
Statistical handbook on adolescents in America

This book compiles data on children from just about everywhere.  You will find data on television viewing, education, smoking and more.

California Statistical Abstract

Available on the Internet: California Statistical Abstract
The statistical abstract of California provides basic demographic and statistical information about California at the county and city level including: employment, registered voters, housing, welfare, deaths by age and sex, top 10 causes of death and more!
 
California State University - Statistical Information
From this site you can access the CSU Statistical Abstract which provides comprehensive statistics on student characteristics, academic and support programs, access, retention and graduation.

United Nations InfoNation
An interactive searchable database of international statistical information.
 
CountryWatch (CSULB Authentication required)
In-depth reviews of 191 countries, including geographical, political, economic, corporate, and environmental information. updated with wire service news.
 
World Factbook

Available on the Internet:World Factbook
Compiled annually by the Central Intelligence Agency and contains information on individual countries, including maps and
such statistics as birth and death rates, migration, literacy rates, economic data, etc.

This book is arranged by state and includes crime rates for specific cities and towns.  What is useful about this title is the ability to look up crime rates on campuses of major universities within the different states nationwide.
Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics

Available on the Internet: Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics
This source offers statistics on a wide variety of topics including: sex offenders, marijuana arrests, number of bombings in the U.S., guns, drunk driving arrests, car thefts, executions by race or state, and many more.   It is easiest to use the index to find specific statistics.
 
Violence in America

This book provides a variety of statistics on violence and combines them with narrative information and further references.

Just Click on the option for Databases! You will then have the choice of finding statistics about Business and Economics, Health and Socioeconomic, Population and Demographics, Government Finance, Education , the Census and Community.
 
A Statistical portrait of the United States : social conditions and trends
Available in Print: REF HA214 .S84 1998
Title includes: Population characteristics,Living arrangements, Education, Health, Labor force and job characteristics, Income, wealth, poverty, Leisure, volunteerism, and religiosity and more.
 
Newspapers: Proquest (CSULB Authentication Required)
This database allows you to search for articles that specifically provide statistics.  From the main screen click on the "Guided" Search tab.  From the next screen you will be able to select "Article Type"- select the "statistics" option.  You will then find articles that give you statistics about your topic if any exist.
 
Factiva (CSULB Authentication Required)
This database allows you to search for articles by selecting the "free text searching".  Add in terms that would indicate statistics e.g. survey- rates- average- percentage, etc.  Be creative and use synonyms and plurals!
