In observance of academic tradition and Commencement decorum, participants are required to wear CSULB custom academic apparel consisting of a black gown and mortarboard (cap) with tassel.
All master's degree candidates will wear gold tassels on their mortarboards. Bachelor's tassels, however, denote the college which grants the degree. (See information at right.)
Liberal Studies candidates may choose to wear the tassel which represents the college of their concentration or of the College of Education. Students renting apparel may keep the cap and tassel as a souvenir. Master's hoods are lined with the University colors, black and gold. Velvet panels show the color of the discipline granting the degree; example: education is light blue and engineering is orange. CSULB bachelor's candidates do not wear hoods.
You may preorder your cap and gown rental at the University Bookstore beginning March 2013.
Personnel at the Bookstore will assist you in selecting the correct apparel size and color tassel.

You will be walking on uneven surfaces (grass and stairs), so please wear appropriate footwear.
Rented apparel should be returned in front of the Bookstore immediately following the ceremony. Rented apparel not returned to the Bookstore may cause a delay in the processing of your diploma.
