Ruth R. Guthrie Scholarship Program
Information and Application

History in the Making
In its continuing effort to influence and assist the advancement of all women at California State University, Long Beach, the President’s Commission on the Status of Women is proud to announce the Ruth R. Guthrie Scholarship Program. During the Spring 2009 semester the Commission will award at least one $500 scholarship for use in the academic 2009-2010 year.
A Legacy Defined
At a time when women’s roles were tightly defined, Ruth R. Guthrie chose to live her life on her own terms. In the 1930’s, Ruth, a truly gifted athlete, played professional tennis and competed in the early industrial sport leagues associated with her places of employment in sports such as softball, basketball and bowling, helping to blaze the way for generations of women interested in sports. Committed to demonstrating the benefits of athletics to young women, she turned her career toward teaching physical education to middle and high school girls and to coaching tennis. A wife and mother, she focused her energies on her family, volunteerism and support of girls’ and women’s issues. Even after she contracted a major neurological disorder, she continued to coach from the confines of her wheelchair. She died of lymphoma at the age of 76. The President’s Commission on the Status of Women – Ruth R. Guthrie Scholarship recognizes women who have made a difference, and encourages others – women and men – to do just the same.
The Application Process
Award of the scholarship will be based on essays that point to a woman who has served as a role model in the applicant’s life. The essay must indicate how the role model helped influence the applicant and how she has helped to shape her or his future professional goals. Women from all walks of life, living or deceased may serve as role models. Applicants for the scholarship must be current undergraduate or graduate students at CSULB carrying six or more units and maintaining a minimum 2.8 grade point average. Continuing students enrolled in any major who meet these requirements may apply for the scholarship.

PCSW Women’s Research Colloquium
Spring 2009
The Women’s Research Colloquium was formed in 1986 through the joint efforts of the CSULB branch of California Women in Higher Education, the Women's Resource Center, and the Office of University Research, and was created to highlight current research of CSULB women faculty and staff members. The Colloquium is an occasion for these researchers to present their work to the entire university community.
In addition to providing a forum for the presentation of their research, the Colloquium accents the diversity of talent and knowledge of women on our campus and thus broadens the scope of university life. As the program has grown over the years the tradition of recognizing women who are making substantial contributions to research and educational excellence continues.
The President’s Commission on the Status of Women is proud to continue this tradition and takes special pride in its continued success and importance for CSULB’s faculty, staff and students.

“The Mamas Were Ripe”
This story is part of a project that examines the changes in political ideology at grassroots levels during the struggle against South African apartheid and its aftermath. Black women in a small township named Munsieville embodied the convergence of two ideological streams during the 1980s: missionary imposed domesticity and Black feminist contextual theology. This convergence created a paradigm shift in understanding of them, influencing how they responded to state violence and racial injustice through leadership and public activism. These ideologies converged within a specific historical space, women’s Christian Burial Societies, where women forged social identities and gained political, religious, economic and emotional support. The resultant vision of women’s empowerment drew women together and gave them the ideological permission to become radical activists.
Dr. Colleen Dunagan, Assistant Professor, Department of Dance
“Consumption as Choreography”
Drawing on deconstructionists notions of the text and poststructuralist concepts of subjectivity, performance and dance studies have expanded the concept of choreography to re-imagine it as both a product of artistic endeavors and as a site of intersecting activities within the social. Concurrently, commercial forms such as advertising, the news, and reality shows have come to demonstrate a conscious awareness of the choreography and performance of identity. This presentation examines how advertisers merge dance and pedestrian movement to shape meaning, reminding us that we choreograph ourselves on a daily basis in a variety of ways through the practices of consumption.
