Barbara – We almost had treats from YoGo! at this meeting, but something must have happened as they have not made it. Be sure to visit YoGo! in the Student Union for a breakfast or a frozen yogurt treat.
Staff and faculty should be receiving an all campus email from 49er Athletics that they are entitled to free admission to most home games.
The Bob Cole Conservatory of Music is offering free tickets to events.
Anne Ambrose spoke about enrollment management. CSULB reduced its number of applicants. Orange Coast, Golden West, and Long Beach community college students get some admission priority, but they have to meet the impacted programs criteria.
Summer session is going to CCPE, and it will not be state-funded.
Barbara Sinclair reported that the President’s Commission on the Status of Women will meet next Friday, October 16th. There will be only one colloquium in 2009 – 2010.
Anne Ambrose has filled the vacant staff Academic Senate spot in an interim position.
Academic Senate has finished covering the Provost Search Committee.
Academic Senate is fully engaged with the Academic Senate Retreat taking place on October 23, 2009. It will deal with the budget and options for handling the coming reductions.
The Campus Goals Committee has met, and it is comprised of Staff Council Chair, Academic Senate Chair, the four Vice Presidents, the Provost, and Vice Provost Dowell.
Although some goals cannot be addressed during the economic downturn, they will be deferred and not eliminated.
President Alexander noted that the Governor’s desk backed up one bill – Bill C.
The California Legislature is so far out of touch. They discussed a new CSU in Chula Vista.
Staff, faculty, and students should continue to find ways to relieve stress and maintain resilience.
The CSULB School of Nursing new building project has begun, using the 5M dollars that was allocated by the state three years ago. Nursing is badly in need of a new building. It is currently one of the places we do not show visitors to our campus.
The President says that nursing admits 90 undergraduate students per year. Six years ago, nursing only graduated about 150 students, and that number is now up to 346 yearly. Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and CSULB Nursing have a very committed partnership, and Memorial has invested 2M per year for 5 years in our student nursing programs. Hoag Hospital has also made substantial donations.
One of the objectives is to approve and implement a nursing doctorate at California State
University, Long Beach. We need more nursing faculty, and the UC system is more interested
in research than in pursuing this degree program.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new nursing building will take place on October 28, 2009.
President Alexander acknowledged appreciation for everyone’s work. Furlough days seem weird! It is quiet on campus, and we don’t want the press to forget us.
The President discussed various pending legislation involving schools. Our success depends on some of these pending bills. For the past two years, CSULB has been second in the nation among master’s degree-granting institutions.
The President said to fire emails and questions to him on Friday, October 9, 2009 – a state budget shut-down day. He will be floating around and able to field questions.
Charles Greenwood – Charles was absent, and there was no report.
Berta Hanson – We have two new members, Denitra Jones in Parking and
University Police, and Pamela Jesse in Special Events Parking.
Berta Hanson reported that as per bylaws, we are changing to the proper way to conduct this committee. This committee will be comprised of one person from each of the five university divisions and headed by the VP of Staff Council.

Staff Council needs a representative for the Faculty Advisory Committee on Academic Technology. A call went out to Don Gardner. Sharon Olson, Parliamentarian, says that the representative can be decided by the Staff Council Executive Committee. We need nominations from staff and can now take the names of interested persons. Gayle Burns is interested in representing staff on this committee.
Kathy Allan, due to personal circumstances, has stepped down from the position of Chair of the Nominating Committee.
Colleen Ryan announced that the Ice Cream Social was a great event, very low
key and fun. There were freshly baked cookies, and vanilla, caramel, chocolate, and whipped
toppings galore for the ice cream which was garnished by colorful sprinkles.
Spooktacular flyers have been electronically distributed. Staff Council members are the conduit
of information for our events, so please get the word out to everyone. Spooktacular Friday is
a furlough day for many, but for those who can attend, it promises to be exiting! Laura
Stone is coordinating the Small and Large Department Decorating Contests for the 2009 Staff
Spooktacular. Colleen Ryan, the Chair of the Staff Council Special Events Committee, is
coordinating the main 2009 Spooktacular event on Friday, October 30th, from 12 noon to 1pm in
front of the bookstore. Bring your lunch, and there will be goody bags and a fabulous costume
Cherishing the Children flyers are on the back table. It will be held December 9, 2009.
1,500 additional families have signed up through the Red Cross this year. There will be many boxes distributed throughout the University for the Toy Drive Collection. The toy drive begins in November and culminates on December 12, 2009. Any additional toys will go to the Red Cross party for families in Long Beach on December 12, 2009. The events committee needs new volunteers with fresh ideas. Barbara Sinclair encouraged involvement on this fun committee. At the last meeting we enjoyed mini cupcakes based on liqueur flavors. Bob Rodgers joked about serving these at the kid’s party. So, come and join our fun events committee planning meetings! Email Colleen Ryan.
Mary Jones-Harley reminded us of the University Art Galleries tour on October 14, 2009. Please meet in the courtyard area between FA-2 and FA-3. Anne Ambrose cautioned that the tour is taking place on upper campus in the galleries, not in the UAM on lower campus.
Charleen Rice noted that more details will be coming out soon for the Holiday Rummage Sale. Barbara Sinclair asked if the public can donate items to Staff Council, and Charleen said, “Yes.” Barbara stated that there will soon be a button on the Staff Council website where anyone can click to donate money to Staff Council.
Sharon Olson says that we are reviewing the bylaws as well as policies and procedures.
We were unable to conduct the budget hearing at this meeting.
Toni presented an inspiring lecture on stress reduction and awareness in these days of
furlough and uncertain budget factors. Toni put forward a holistic philosophy of
dealing with changing the stresses we create and face from outside forces in our lives. It
is important to always be mindful of the positive moments we experience and create for
ourselves among situations around us which may appear chaotic or uncertain.
