Library & Information Competency

What is Information Competency?

Information Competency refers to a set of abilities in which individuals can recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information. An information competent individual is able to:

  • determine the extent of information needed
  • access the needed information effectively and efficiently
  • evaluate information and its sources critically
  • incorporate selected information into one's knowledge base
  • use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
  • understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally

How is the CSULB Library involved?

The CSULB University Library has developed Information Literacy Minimum Standards.  The University Library is committed to helping students successfully utilize the Library and information of all kinds. We do this through course-integrated instruction and a variety of other methods that connect students and the Library.

What projects and grants are currently in progress?

SURF: Students Understanding Research Fundamentals
The SURF tutorial is design for undergraduate students in general education courses, working on 2-5 page paper, speeches or presentations.  The tutorial will help them find, analyze and incorporate scholarly research into their papers and assignments.
