While many aid programs are directed primarily to recognizing academic achievement or leadership potential, the Horatio Alger program also seeks students who have a commitment to use their college degrees in service to others.

Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society

Eligible Navy and Marine Corps families pursue their academic goals by providing a source of education financing. Awards are provided solely on the basis of the applicant's financial need & availability of funds, in accordance with policies established by the Society's Board of Directors.
All applicants must have at least a 2.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).

All applicants for these programs must be enrolled or planning to enroll as full-time undergraduate students in a traditional classroom setting at a post-secondary, technical, or vocational institution that participates in the U. S. Department of Education Title IV financial aid programs inquiry.

New Horizons Scholarships: Royal Neighbors "nontraditional" scholarship program provides educational support to members who don't fall into the usual college age range. 10 scholarships are open to female members ages 35 & older. Scholarship amounts are available up to $5,000 for part-time students or full-time students enrolled at an accredited college, university, junior college, or vocational school.
New Horizons Leader Scholarship: This scholarship provides educational opportunities for outstanding women age 35 or older by annually awarding up to $5,000 for up to 4 years. The most qualified female applicant is chosen from the New Horizon applicants.
Life Enrichment Scholarships: This scholarship is designed for beneficial members ages 21 & older who are interested in continuing their education through short-term courses.5 awards of a maximum of $500 will be made to those who complete the required form & provide any additional requested information.

The SVA scholarship program will grant scholarships to student veterans that have demonstrated academic excellence in the following categories:

Critical programs commonly referred to as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM degrees.
International relations, foreign language, and diplomacy programs.
Other high demand fields as dictated by foundations and donors.

The Fund for Veterans' Education Scholarship

Provides scholarships to veterans of any branch of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines), Coast Guard, National Guard & Armed Forces Reserves.

Must have served & been deployed for at least 60 days in Afghanistan or Iraq after September 11, 2001, or be veterans who were deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq after September 11, 2001, but did not meet the 60-day active service period as a result of a service-related injury or condition incurred while serving in Afghanistan or Iraq.
Be enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis in an undergraduate program of study at any accredited 2-year or 4-year institution, public or private, including technical schools for the Spring 2008 term. The program may continue past 2008-2009, but they are not considering applications for those not enrolled for Spring, 2008 at this time.
Have applied for & accepted all federal, state & institutional need-based grants & all available military educational benefits.

Must be honorably discharged from any branch of the US military or Coast Guard & be enrolled or about to enroll in an entrepreneurial course of study.
Completed application packets must include a current resume, academic transcript, copy of military discharge certificate, brief essay of career goal, & 2 letters of recommendation.

VFW Military Scholarships

The VFW's Military Scholarship program provides 25 $3,000 scholarships annually to VFW members who are currently serving in uniform or have been discharged within the 36 months before the December 31 deadline.
The scholarships will be awarded to service members from each branch of service (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard) during the 1st quarter of the year following the deadline.

Note: For 2009, the program has been renamed to VFW Military Family Scholarship, & service members may elect to use the scholarship for their spouse or child to attend school.
