The mission for the First Year Experience (FYE) Program is to facilitate the successful transition of undergraduate students to the university through the provision of programs and services designed to familiarize students with the expectations and policies of the university as well as to introduce students to the resources available to them. The First Year Experience's 5 major goals are to:

  • Encourage students to actively engage in their first year experience
  • Provide opportunities and resources to help all new students connect to CSULB
  • Provide a supportive environment for students to succeed and thrive
  • Foster academic success through academic advising and support services
  • Assist students in becoming advocates for their own safety and well-being

FYE Kickoff Event

  • Date: September 5
  • This event is for new students wanting to get connected to CSULB and other new students by becoming involved in the First Year Experience (FYE) program. Students who attend this event will receive a free FYE t-shirt, food, and the chance to win raffle prizes. Participation will be limited to the first 200 students who check-in at the event.
  • Registration Closed!

Time Management

  • Dates: September 9 & 10
  • Time & Location: Sept. 9 @ 1pm in USU-303
  • Time & Location: Sept. 10 @ 11:00am in USU-205
  • In this session students will learn strategies to:
    • Stay on top of their coursework and still have a personal life
    • Prioritize tasks to ensure timely completion
    • Reduce stress and anxiety around “crunch” time like midterms and finals

Writing Proficiency Exam Prep (Transfers Only)

  • Dates: September 12
  • Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm
  • Location: Sept. 9 (USU-303) Sept. 10 (USU-205)
  • In this session students will:
    • Gain insight to the WPE
    • Receive tips and information on how to prepare for the WPE
    • Get hands on practice with sample essay questions

First Year Experience (FYE) Program

First-year students are encouraged to participate in the First-Year Experience (FYE) Success Series, designed to assist students in their transition to CSULB through the provision of critical information, resources, and programs. Students who complete the FYE Certificate requirements will earn a Certificate of Completion and invitation to a special end of year celebration. Click here to read more about the FYE Program.
