First Year Programs Making Connections Student Support Academic Success Safety and Well-Being

The mission for the First Year Experience (FYE) Program is to facilitate the successful transition of first year undergraduate students to the university through the provision of programs and services designed to introduce students to critical programs, services and resources as well as connect them to the university and fellow students.

The First Year Experience's 5 major goals are to:

  • Encourage students to actively engage in their first year experience
  • Provide opportunities and resources to help all new students connect to CSULB
  • Provide a supportive environment for students to succeed and thrive
  • Foster academic success through academic advising and support services
  • Assist students in becoming advocates for their own safety and well-being

Register to become a Member of the First Year Experience (FYE) Success Program (current students only)

Attend or complete a minimum of 10 FYE workshops in your first year at CSULB by attending at least 1 Category A, Category I, and Category L workshop. Students may only count 1 Category E workshop towards their FYE Certificate.

Up-coming Events

Writing College Papers (Category A)

Date: Tuesday, November 4th & Wednesday, November 5th
Time: November 4th @ 2:00pm & November 5 @ 11:00am
Location: USU-205 (Both Workshops)

In this session, students will:
• Be be able to discern myths from facts regarding alcohol
• Participate in interactive games & activities
• Learn to assess risk factors involving alcohol consumption

Students who participate in this event will enjoy a "Mocktail Mixer" with non-alcoholic beverages and snacks provided by FYE.

An Introduction to Health Professions (Category A)

Date: Thursday, November 6th
Time: 11:00am-12:00pm
Location: USU-303

In this session, students will:
• Have a general understanding of what professional schools look for in applicants
• Grasp the degree of difficulty in gaining admissions to schools
• Understand the important admissions considerations & become a balanced applicant

Scholarships (Category L)

Date: Wednesday, November 12th
Time: 11:00am-12:00pm
Location: USU-205

In this session students will learn how to:
• Narrow down their topics and develop a thesis
• Develop outlines for papers
• Plan their time so that they are not writing the night before the paper is due

* Students are encouraged to bring their own writing topics/assignments to use during the workshop.

First Year Experience (FYE) Program

First-year students are encouraged to participate in the First-Year Experience (FYE) Success Series, designed to assist students in their transition to CSULB through the provision of critical information, resources, and programs. Students who complete the FYE Certificate requirements will earn a Certificate of Completion and invitation to a special end of year celebration. Click here to read more about the FYE Program.
