Special Admission Application Packet

About the Special Admissions Process

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the Stephen Benson Program (SBP) at California State University Long Beach. Enclosed is the Special Admission packet which you requested.

The Special Admission process is a means by which California Residents, who may not meet the regular admission requirements due to a disability, but are "otherwise qualified," may appeal for special consideration by the Admissions Office at California State University Long Beach (CSULB). The Stephen Benson Program (SBP) facilitates this process by providing additional information about the applicant's circumstances to the Admissions Office. It is our function to evaluate documentation of the learning disability using guidelines established by the California State University system. Applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Admission decisions are made by the Admissions Office

A student wishing to be considered for special admission to the university must apply through regular admission procedures and in accordance with all deadlines specified by the Admissions Office. For regular admission criteria for California State University at Long Beach, please visit the CSULB Enrollment Services website at www.csulb.edu/admissions , or contact the CSULB Admissions Office at (562) 985-5471.

Eligibility Criteria for Special Admission

Please note the eligibility criteria for CSULB is subject to a competitive admission standard. For additional explanation of this, please contact the Admissions Office.

In order to assist our office in providing Admissions with information concerning a special admissions applicant, please forward the following information to the Stephen Benson Program:

  • Personal Statement letter describing student's interest in attending California State University Long Beach (CSULB).
  • Minimum of two letters of recommendation from school counselors, appropriate school personnel and/or teachers.
  • Transcripts (unofficial copies OK).
  • Include a copy of SAT or ACT test results (indicate special administration of the examination) or transcripts of 60 transferable units from a community college.
  • Verification of specific learning disability - acceptable documentation should consist of a psycho-educational report and/or other professional verification. Documentation should be dated within the last 3 years from time of application. Note: Individual Educational Plans are not an acceptable form of verification for the CSU system.
  • Photograph of applicant.
  • Completed Special Admission Information Form and checklist of these requirements.
