Mission Statement

The Autism Ally Program is an awareness program that teaches a network of faculty, staff, administrators and students committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Aspergerís Syndrome.

Training Objectives

  • Recognize our students with autism on the campus
  • Understand the strengths and limitations students with autism or Aspergerís experience in postsecondary education
  • Accommodate our students with autism or Aspergerís in the classroom and on campus
  • Diffuse situations that may be seem malicious or threatening
  • Refer someone with autism for services in a crisis situation

Program Layout/Information/Training Objectives

The Autism Ally seminar is a half-day event focused on the following:

  • Introduction & PowerPoint - Autism Ally program mission and CSULB Disabled Student Servicesí approach to assisting students with autism on campus
  • Information on Autism - Autism and postsecondary education, recognizing autism on campus
  • Sensory Experience Ė Day in the life skit and video
  • Panel - student experiences in the classroom and on campus
  • Role Play - How to be explicit and communicate effectively with students that have autism
  • LIFE Project and LIFE Leadership Programs Ė program statements and how we are helping students with autism
  • Opening network to refer students to LIFE and DSS - Being an Ally, how to make a referral, and tiers of support

Participant List

Participants who completed the training will become part of the Autism Ally receive an Autism Ally decal and a certificate.
