Club Description

What is Dragon Boating?
For those unfamiliar with the sport, dragon boating simply put, is a boat of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steers person paddling to cross the finish line faster than their competition. It's a team sport in its purest form that encompasses the elements of power, speed, synchronization and endurance.

With its beginnings in Southern China, dragon boating today is the fastest growing international team water sport. Each year, race festivals are held around the world in Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe and the United States, one of the largest festivals in the North America is held right here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The appeal to dragon boating is mainly contributed to the sport’s ability to accommodate a wide spectrum of skill levels ranging from novice to competitive. At the novice and recreational level, teams often form as a means of social outlet, team building and an alternative means of exercise.

For the spectator, the true display of the sport’s intensity and skill is witnessed in the competitive ranks. Competitive paddlers rigorously train to condition themselves in the areas strength, endurance, form, mental focus and most importantly timing. Teams with well conditioned paddlers in near perfect synchronization, fueled by competition, provides an impressive event of a cascade of boats exploding through the water. At this level dragon boat racing becomes a sport of inches and an exciting event for its spectators.

Club Description

Jiu Jitsu is one of the most ancient forms of martial arts. It was created centuries ago in China and Japan. Jiu Jitsu is known as the "gentle art" because it makes it possible to subdue an opponent without throwing a single punch.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu focuses on bringing the fight to the ground utilizing holds, arm locks, chokes, leg locks and strikes, to defeat an opponent.

Our club is affiliated with Southbay Jiu Jitsu and has highly qualified instructors on hand to teach. Bob Bass, the first American Black Belt under the world-famous Machado Brothers, founded Southbay Jiu Jitsu. Bob shocked the Jiu Jitsu World in 1995 by beating the world champion at that time. Bob is known throughout the US and Brazil as one of the most technical and well-respected Jiu Jitsu practitioners the US has ever produced. Bob will be making frequent appearances at club meetings to instruct our members.

Kendo literally means ‘The Way of the Sword’ and is one of Japan’s oldest and most popular Martial Arts.
Kendo is said to have been developed by Master Nakanishi Chuzo of Edo in approximately 1750 in order to minimise the danger of injury faced by students practicing the original Samurai art of Kenjutsu.
The modern Martial Art of Kendo is the product of years of refinement yet it still holds true to traditional Japanese Sword culture.
Kendo has no gender or physical barriers. It teaches the student to be calm in a threatening situation and develops confidence and strength of spirit. Kendo is practiced by using a bamboo sword (Shinai) for contact work and a Bokken (oak wooden sword) for Kata. Armor includes a Men (head protection), Do (body protection) and Kote (hand and wrist protection). Normally the practitioner wears traditional Japanese clothing, Hakama (trousers) and Gi (jacket). No foot wear is used. It is worth dispelling a few myths at this point. Kendo is not about aggression; it is not about great physical strength and it is not about hurting your opponent. It is about respecting your opponent. Kendo is a journey. Every practitioner has their own reason for taking up Kendo. However every Kendo practitioner is responsible for ensuring their fellow student develops within the Martial Art. Today, Kendo (Japanese Sword Fencing) has developed into a competitive sport enjoyed by many millions of people around the world and is generally
recognized as one of the best forms of Mind, Body and Spirit training.

Martial Arts Tricking is an acrobatic discipline, practiced on any flat surface devoid of obstacles or walls. Tricking draws upon elements of gymnastic tumbling, martial arts kicking and twisting techniques, and ground moves. These elements define martial arts tricking from a scientific standpoint, but it has been said that:

"Describing tricking as a combination of kicks, flips, and twists is like describing books as a combination of letters, spaces, and punctuation. The social experience of tricking as it's practiced is about community; friendship, support, and respect for each other's accomplishments".

Club Description

The Sailing Association is one of the oldest continuing recreational clubs on campus. The club maintains it's own fleet of varying craft in order to make sailing accessible and affordable for the CSULB community and to promote sailing as a life-long sport.

In addition to recreational day-sailing by individual club skippers, the club's primary activity is instruction. Lessons, seminars, and practice sessions are available for those at many skill levels, including those who know nothing about sailing.

There are many scheduled events where the club day-sails as a group. Existing skippers check out the boats. Non-skippers may sail under the supervision of any skipper. These events are diverse, from beach catamaran sailing to moonlight harbor cruises to sailing amongst the Tall Ships. Club boats also turn out for local events such as the Alamitos Bay Christmas Boat Parade and the Fourth of July fireworks at the Queen Mary.

Although the purpose of the club is largely instructional and recreational, there are also many opportunities to race the club's boats. Club skippers are increasingly making their presence known in local yacht club regattas and have proven themselves serious contenders.

Club Description

Karate may be defined as a weaponless means of self-defense consists of dynamic offensive and defensive techniques using all parts of the body to their maximum advantage.

Karate as Athletic Training: The values of Karate to modern man are numerous. In our everyday lives we often forget the value of exercise to both our physical and mental health. The practice of karate tones the body, develops coordination, quickens reflexes, and builds stamina.

Karate as Self-Defense: Karate is one of the most dynamic of all the martial arts. The trained karateka is able to coordinate his mind and body perfectly, thereby allowing him to unleash tremendous physical power at will. Therefore, it is not the possession of great physical strength that makes a strong karateka; rather it is the ability to coordinate mind and body. Upon developing this ability, even the smallest person finds that he has within himself the power to deliver a devastation blow to any would-be attacker.

Karate to Develop Clarity of Mind: The serious practice of karate develops composure, a clearer thought process, deeper insight into one's mental capabilities, and more self-confidence. In this karate is not an end, but a means to an end. It is an activity in which advancing age is not a hindrance. Rather it encourages proficiency and the keen coordination of mind and body.

Ultimate frisbee is a game in which two teams use a plastic disc to score goals. Using a combination of skill and strategy, players pass the frisbee to each other across the field to get to the end zone. Meanwhile, the opposing team will be running around trying to swat or intercept the frisbee so that they can gain possession of the frisbee and try to score goals.

One great thing about Ultimate is that it is a non-contact sport, unlike football or hockey.

Everyone needs to get out and have fresh air and good exercise every now and then. Nothing beats the feeling of having a good workout, and being with a group who enjoys the same activities as you do.

You'll have fun. You'll get exercise. You'll meet people.
