Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is this where I talk to someone about which class(es) I should take?

    No, it is not. Often, Counseling and Psychological Services is confused with academic counseling. If you are seeking academic assistance, you should contact Univeristy Center for Undergraduate Advising in the Horn Center. Note: If you are transferring to CSULB from another school, you should first meet with someone in University Outreach and School Relations.

  2. Can I select my own counselor?

    All of the psychologists at CAPS are capable of assisting you with any concern you might have. When making an appointment with CAPS, it is best to accept the first available appointment that meets your personal schedule. Counseling appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis and fill up quite quickly. We cannot assure you that you will be able to meet with a specific counselor of your choosing, and waiting for the availability of a specific counselor might prolong your opportunity to address your concerns with a counselor.

  3. What's the difference between a Workshop and a Group?

    A Workshop is an event that is preplanned and often facilitated by one or more of CAPS counselors. Workshops address a specific topic and are a form of university outreach that the counselors at CAPS provide. A Workshop is scheduled through contact with the CAPS Outreach Coordinator.

    Group Counseling is a form of counseling in which a small number of people meet together under the guidance of professionally trained therapists to help themselves, while at the same time help others within the group. Each semester a new list of Groups is available at CAPS.

  4. Do you offer Couples' Counseling?

    No, we do not.

  5. Do I have to come into the office to make an appointment, and how long does one appointment last?

    We encourage you to make your appointment over the telephone, or you're welcome to come into the office to make an appointment as well. Your initial intake appointment lasts 90 minutes in length; each counseling session after that lasts 50 minutes. You should arrive 30 minutes early for your first session, in order to complete the Intake paperwork. Make an appointment.

  6. Are your services confidential?

    As an essential aspect of our efforts to provide an environment where students are free to seek help, the center maintains the strictest standards of privacy and confidentiality. In adherence to the laws of the California Board Psychology, counseling records are kept separate from all academic, administrative, disciplinary and medical records. No information about a student's contact with the center is released without the knowledge and written consent of the student. Read our Confidentiality Statement.
