Summer Bridge Program Assessment

Summer Bridge Program (Summer 2007):  The Summer Bridge Program (SBP) is a six-week summer residential program designed to provide newly admitted students with an opportunity to bridge the academic, cultural and social gap from the high school environment to the university environment.  Students are selected based on the need to complete double or single pre-baccalaureate instruction in English and math.  Course placement is determined by Entry Level Math examinations and the English Placement Test and instructor assessment. The SBP accomplishes its program goals by:

  1. Providing an introduction to the college academic experience, orientation to campus life, university resources and the opportunity to develop a network/learning community of students on campus through classroom instruction in EOP 10,0 a two-unit orientation and study skills course.  One hundred percent of the 63 students completing SBP passed EOP 100.

  2. Developing basic math and English skill levels with 6 weeks of intensive instruction in either math 1, math 7, math 11 and English 1. Successful completion of these review course led to 47 students who were promoted to the next level of pre-baccalaureate or General Education math and 45 students who were promoted to General Education English.

  3. Providing opportunities for students to gain leadership skills and an understanding of diverse experiences, cultures and societies within the university. This was accomplished through a variety of enrichment programs which included the university’s Leadership Academy.
