Overview

In 2002, 2005, and 2009 the offices of Testing, Evaluation & Assessment and Institutional Research & Assessment conducted the CSULB Student Satisfaction Survey. After examining numerous satisfaction survey instruments from other colleges and universities and considering our student population, the CSULB Student Satisfaction Survey Instrument was developed. Using a randomly stratified sample of classes on the campus, the instrument was administered by faculty during their regularly scheduled classes in the fall of 2002 and the spring of 2005. In the spring of 2009, the instrument was administered via the web to all enrolled students. Samples of respondents in each administration of the survey closely resembled the CSULB student population by gender, ethnicity, age, and degree objective.

One of the most important questions we asked was "if you could start your college education over again, would you enroll at CSULB?" Other survey items pertained to difficulties students reported to have at CSULB, satisfaction with the quality of courses and other academic items, satisfaction with a wide variety of out-of-class services and activities, self-ratings of talent development in diverse skills as a result of attending CSULB, and views of the campus environment for race/ethnicity, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, disabilities, religion, and safety. Interestingly, we discovered that students who said they would re-enroll at CSULB also reported significantly greater satisfaction with all measures of campus climate except for safety, which nearly all students rated very positively.

The CSULB Student Satisfaction Survey was once again conducted in the spring of 2009, with a special focus on campus food services. More than 4,100 students participated. Results for all three administrations (2002, 2005, and 2009) appear in the pages of this website.
