UHP Requirements

Every student electing General Honors in the University Honors Program must complete all University-wide graduation requirements. General Honors is itself not a major.

General Honors Plan I (minimum of 24 units)
is designed for entering freshmen and consists of a minimum of 18 units (i.e. 6 courses) of lower- and upper-division General Education, major and/or elective Honors courses and a culminating 6-unit independent scholarly project in the student’s major (UHP 496 Research Participation and UHP 498 Senior Thesis/Project). If an Honors student registers for research and thesis credit through his or her major department, these units may be substituted for UHP 496 and UHP 498.

General Honors Plan II (minimum of 15 units) is designed for upper-division transfer students and continuing CSULB students and consists of a minimum of 9 units (i.e. 3 courses) of upper-division General Education, major and/or elective Honors courses and a culminating 6-unit independent scholarly project in the student’s major (UHP 496 Research Participation and UHP 498 Senior Thesis/Project). If an Honors student registers for research and thesis credit through his or her major department, these units may be substituted for UHP 496 and UHP 498.

Honors in the Major (minimum of 9 units) generally consists of one upper-division Honors-specific course offered through the major department and a culminating 6-unit independent scholarly project in the student’s major (courses offered through the major department equivalent to UHP 496 and UHP 498). Only select departments offer Honors options; to find out about Honors in a major field of study, please contact the major department office or undergraduate major advisor directly. Students in the University Honors Program whose major department offers an Honors in the major option may apply to participate in both programs.

Requirements for Earning an Honors Certificate
In addition to graduating with a degree from California State University, Long Beach, UHP students can also earn a certificate and medallion that will be presented at the annual Honors Spring Banquet. To receive the Honors certificate and medallion, students must complete the requirements of the option under which they entered the UHP, including the culminating 6-unit independent scholarly project in the students' major.

Note: In order to qualify for priority registration through the University Honors Program, students must abide by the Event Attendance & Priority Registration Guidelines, created in an effort to garner engagement in Program activities, on-campus opportunities, and community projects.
