Internal Funding Opportunities

Research, scholarly, and creative activity is a core mission of our institution. Internal, centrally administered support for research, scholarly, and creative activity (RSCA) is available from 3 sources/programs:

Mini-grants and summer stipends (MGSS);
Reassigned time; and
Discretionary funding from ORSP/AA for Research Initiatives.

Funding and regulations for MGSS are mandated by the legislature and the Chancellor’s office, while funding and regulations for reassigned time and discretionary initiatives are determined on campus.

The following activities are eligible for all RSCA Awards:

Basic Research
Applied Research and
Creative Activities in the Arts

The following activities are typically ineligible for any RSCA Awards:

Curricular development or improvement including pedagogical research
Department or college programs or facilities
Completion of requirements for an advanced degree
Community service

Mini-grants and Summer Stipends

Please note that at this present time there are no funds from the Chancellor's office for Mini-grants/Summer Stipends for 2013-2014 due to budget cuts to CSU.

Reassigned Time for the 2013/2014 Academic Year

The Provost's Office has authorized funding to support Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities (RSCA) Assigned Time Awards for 2013-2014 academic year. Please be aware that the availability of funds to support this program is subject to modification based on changes to CSULB funding that may occur as a result of the Governor’s budget announcement January, 10 2013.

Application Deadline – 5 p.m. February 1, 2013 to College Office.

Individual College Councils are responsible for determining the criteria for applying, evaluating and recommending RSCA reassigned time. Although there are no required guidelines or application forms, Colleges may wish to use the forms previously required for assigned time applications. Assigned Time Guidelines and Application Forms

Discretionary ORSP/AA Research Funding Initiatives

The application period for the following ORSP/AA research funding initiatives closed on February 1, 2013.

ORSP/AA Faculty Stipend Research Incentive Awards
In response to a very strong application pool, Academic Affairs and the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs have awarded 21 stipends to faculty to promote grant proposal submission. This is the first time this competition has been held. See the list of award recipients.

ORSP/AA Multidisciplinary Research Awards
This year we received 18 high quality proposals in response to this announcement. Four awards, requesting a total of $44,348, were selected for funding based upon their level of interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, student involvement, and overall merit. See the list of award recipients.
