The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals

Safety

The Guide mentions both occupational health and safety as principal concerns in the use and care of laboratory animals. Potential hazards-such as animal bites, chemical cleaning agents, allergens, and zoonoses-that are inherent in or intrinsic to animal use exist.

As stated earlier in this module, the IACUC requires specific safety training given by the Safety Office (CNS&M) for all protocols. Additional species specific or methodology training can be provided by the Research Facilities Coordinator.

PIs, animal facilities staff, the veterinarian, and the Committee share in the responsibility to anticipate, train for, and maintain vigilance against hazards and risks. Hazard materials handling and storage must be cleared through the college or University hazardous materials offices.
