Did You Know?

Based on White House’s Criteria, CSULB is Among the Nation’s Best Values

In its ratings using the Obama administration’s criteria of assessing schools, Time magazine listed CSULB among the top 10 best value colleges and universities in the nation based on graduation rate, tuition costs and percentage of students who receive Pell Grants, the federal low-income scholarship.

The magazine gathered data for 2,500 campuses across the country and ranked them according to the White House’s proposed metrics.

CSULB was the only CSU campus in the top 10. The next two CSUs ranked were Fresno State and CSU Stanislaus, which were listed at No. 21 and 22, respectively.

"This recognition, compared to universities in all categories, is the result of the hard work over the past decade of many faculty and staff, especially academic advisors, under the aegis of our Highly Valued Degree Initiative," said Provost David Dowell. "Their combined efforts prompted a dramatic rise in our graduation rates that has led to this remarkable recognition. I am proud of our campus."

Passing of Former CBA Dean Moustafa

It is with much sadness that we share the news that Dr. Mohamed E. Moustafa, former dean of the College of Business Administration, passed away on April 20.

Dr. Moustafa joined the college’s faculty in 1969 as an Associate Professor of Accountancy. He served as Department Chair from 1976 to 1979, and as Dean from 1981 to 1988. During his career he created professional partnerships between the college and the business community that benefited students, faculty, and the administration. He played a significant role in getting the College of Business Administration building constructed. He also founded and led the Gamma Omega Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the international honor organization for accountancy and financial professionals.

In addition to his accomplishments at CSULB, Dr. Moustafa served as President of the United Arab Emirates University, a consultant with the World Bank and the United States Agency for International Development, and Dean of the College of Business at California State University, San Marcos.

Dr. Moustafa is survived by his wife Margaret, their devoted sons, Shereef and Tamir, and three grandchildren.

A celebration of Dr. Moustafa’s life is planned for Friday, May 16, at 11 am in the lobby of the Gerald R. Daniel Recital Hall. Please RSVP to mmousta@calstatela.edu. Dr. Moustafa asked that donations be made to Beta Alpha Psi or the Long Beach Memorial Hospital Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center, in lieu of flowers.

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication recently received national accreditation from the prestigious Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. There are only eight other accredited programs in California.

Congratulations to Department Chair Chris Burnett and the faculty and staff who have worked hard over the past few years to achieve this.
