Assistant Professor of Art (Illustration/Animation)

Effective Date

August 18, 2014 (Fall Semester)

Salary Range

Commensurate with training and experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MFA in Studio Art or official notification of the completion of the degree by August 1, 2014, or equivalent record of extraordinary professional achievement
  • Demonstrated strong skills in the image-making areas of drawing, painting, illustration as related to the field of animation, and demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles of animation
  • Demonstrated ability to teach both digital and non-digital methods and familiarity with computer applications related to art and animation
  • Commitment to and/or expertise teaching diverse student population

Desired/Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of previous teaching experience at the college level and an outstanding record of nationally recognized professional achievement
  • Demonstrated image-making skills with an emphasis on one or more of the following: Experimental Animation (including digital applications), Visual Development, and/or Preproduction Art
  • Other relevant areas of expertise may include character design, layout, background painting, storyboarding, 3D modeling
  • Candidate must demonstrate a strong visual imagination


  • Teach at both the undergraduate and graduate level courses in the Illustration/Animation program
  • Program coordination duties which include: collaborate with faculty in the ongoing development of the animation track which provides a broad range of animation experiences
  • Supervise part-time faculty
  • Act as program liaison with professionals in the field of animation
  • Other responsibilities include student advising, serving as Program Head on a rotating basis, involvement in student activities, curriculum development, committee work, service to the School of Art, college, university and community, and professional creative development

Required Documentation

  • Formal letter of application addressing the minimum and desired/preferred qualifications

  • Resume/curriculum vitae with current email address

  • Statement of teaching philosophy

  • Copy of transcript from institution awarding highest degree

  • At least three signed current letters of recommendation from professionals in the field addressing the applicant’s specific qualifications for the position

  • Digital portfolio on CD or DVD including 20 or more images of work, animation, (or combination of the two) by the applicant, and, any prior teaching experience, 20 or more images of work and/or animation by applicant’s students as JPEG images with a maximum size of 2000 pixels in the longest dimension and/or compressed .mov files on one or more CD/DVD. Images on CD must be accompanied with printed back-up comprising printed images and captions corresponding to all digital images submitted. Student work should include caption information about the nature of the assignment and/or the course in which the work was produced. Portfolios submitted as PDFs or PowerPoint or other similar digital presentations will not be accepted. All required documentation will be retained by the School of Art

  • Applicants may also include copies of performance evaluations from prior teaching experience and other documentation regarding instruction and instructionally related activity; research, scholarly and creative activity; and service activities. Request to return these documents: Provide a self-addressed envelope with adequate postage and clear instructions

  • Finalists will be required to submit sample syllabi, a signed SC-1 university application form, and official, hard copy of transcript
