FAQ: Faculty Choice Between Old (1996) and New (2009) RTP Policies

July 13, 2010

This FAQ addresses questions regarding faculty choice between the old (1996) and the new (2009) RTP policies as well as the implementation and timelines for new department RTP policies.

  1. If I am undergoing RTP evaluation, which policies do I follow?

    • Faculty members hired prior to Fall 2009 will have the choice to be reviewed under either the old (1996) or the new (2009) set of RTP policies until Fall 2014.
    • Faculty members whose hire date is Fall 2009 or later, including those with service credit, will be governed by all new RTP policies.

  1. When do I select the policy that will be used for my current evaluation?

    • Faculty members will be asked to make an irrevocable, one-time choice that will govern their review process through Reappointment, Tenure, and/or Promotion.
    • Faculty members up for Reappointment, Tenure, or Tenure and Promotion in Fall 2010 will make their choice when they submit their file for review on October 4, 2010.
    • Faculty members up for Mini review in Spring 2011 will make their choice when they submit their file for review on February 7, 2011.
    • Promotion is optional. Therefore, faculty members up for Promotion only will make their choice when they submit their file for review in October of 2010, 2011, 2012, or 2013, as appropriate. However, faculty members up for Promotion only in Fall 2014 or later will no longer have the option to choose their RTP policies and will automatically be under all new RTP policies.
  1. How will Faculty Affairs know which policies I am selecting?

Faculty Affairs has provided a selection form to be completed and attached to the RTP file when it is submitted to the department for review.

  1. What if my department has not completed its department-level policy?

    • Faculty hired prior to Fall 2009 may chose either the old policies or the new policies.
    • Faculty who select the new policies will default to the new University and college policies for 2010-2011. NO department-level policy will be used. However, from 2011-2012 on, they will be under all three new policies: University, college, and department.

  1. When I make my RTP policy selection, can I mix and match policies?

NO, faculty members will choose one set of policies and will not be allowed to “mix-and-match” policies. That is, all old University, college and department policies or all new University, college, and department policies.

  1. Once I have made my selection can I change my mind?

NO, once the file has been submitted on October 4, 2010, or February 7, 2011 (as appropriate) your choice becomes irrevocable.

  1. When will the old policy be no longer in use?

By Fall 2014, all faculty members will be reviewed under the new University, college, and department RTP policies.
