Jacqueline Luna Germany
The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs,
The program strongly encourages students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia. The program aims to encourage students in non-traditional disciplines (such as the sciences and engineering) to study abroad, although all disciplines are eligible.
All recipients are required to carry out a follow-on project that promotes the Gilman Scholarship at the students' home institution or community. The follow-on project proposal, statement of purpose essay and academic progress are closely considered in the selection process. Please contact the Gilman Scholarship Advisor, Linda Olson-Levy, at: llevy@csulb.edu or (562) 985-8429 for assistance.
Fulbright Scholarship Recipient for Fall 2009
April Arrozal South Korea
A recent graduate of California State University, Long Beach, April Arrozal has been selected as a 2000-10 U.S. Student Fulbright Scholarship recipient and, as such, will spend the next academic year abroad as an English Teaching Assistantships (ETA). The Fulbright ETA Program is designed to improve foreign students' English language abilities and knowledge of the United States. Participants are placed in schools or universities outside of capital cities in more than 20 countries and are fully integrated into the host community, increasing their own language skills and knowledge of the host country. Arrozal who has a B.A. degree at CSULB will go to South Korea for her teaching assistantship. Interestingly, April’s sister, Christine (former CSULB student) also served as a Fulbright ETA in South Korea for 2007-08.
The Fulbright program provides grants for graduate students, scholars, professionals, teachers and administrators from the United States and other countries. As the flagship international education program sponsored by the U.S. government, the Fulbright program is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and the people of other countries. With this goal, the program has provided more than 250,000 participants -- chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential -- with the opportunity to study and teach in others countries, to exchange ideas and to develop joint solutions to shared concerns.
