SUBJECT: CREDENTIAL PROGRAM FOR HEALTH SCIENCE MAJORS

The following policy statement, recommended by the Academic Senate at its meeting of September 29, 1977, approved by the President on October 14, 1977, and approved by the Commission for Teacher Preparation and Licensing on December 30, 1977, is as follows:

CREDENTIAL PROGRAM FOR HEALTH SCIENCE MAJORS (B.S.) UNDER SINGLE SUBJECT AREA OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

HISTORY
    Under the Fisher Credential program, it was possible for a Health Science Major to be credentialed in that subject area. With the new Ryan Credential program, Health Science was not included among the single subject areas. One of the single subject areas under which it was subsumed is Physical Education. The Teacher Preparation and Licensing Commission has provided for a waiver program which makes it possible for students desiring to take the major portion of their work in a subsumed area to be credentialed. The following proposed credential program for Health Science majors has been worked out in agreement with the Men's Physical Education Department and has been approved by the Teacher Education Council on this campus.

PROGRAM
    The required courses fulfill Ryan Commission criteria in biological foundation, sociological foundation, psychological foundation, evaluation and measurement, and institutional subject matter.

    The student will be required to complete from 23 to 25 units in Physical Education. Required courses in the Health Science major total 58 units. Of these 58 units, 28 are at the lower division level. The majority can also serve to fulfill general education requirements (e.g., Psychology 100). In addition, it is necessary to complete 27 units in Education coursework (including Advanced Composition and Final Directed Field Experience).

    A student in this program can complete requirements for the B.S. degree and the Credential within four years. Undoubtedly the student with dual preparation will be in a stronger position in the job market than one with single preparation.
