The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies is designed for students who wish to get a broad overview of the field of communication studies. Students choosing this program may select course work from all of the dimensions found in communication, and are exposed to the theory and skills that define the scope and breadth of the discipline.
Requirements
This requires 48 units of which 36 are upper division. All Communication Studies majors, regardless of option chosen, are required to complete the following lower division and upper division core classes.
1. Lower Division Requirements: 12 lower division units consisting of COMM 110, COMM 130 or COMM 171, COMM 131/131W, and COMM 200*
*Students must take COMM 200 in their first year of declaring the major
2. Upper Division Core Requirements: 18 upper division core courses consisting of COMM 300, 301, 306, 307, 309, and 330
3. Elective Courses: An additional 18 units of course work (of which at least 9 units must be in 400-level courses, and no more than 3 units at the 100 or 200 level) are required for the major. Students will choose one of the following degree options for completion of the major.

Taking COMM 132 and 220 as electives will count toward graduation, but will not reduce the upper division requirements for the major.
Only courses in which a "C" or better have been earned may be applied to satisfy upper division requirements in the major. Classes taken in which less than adequate grades are received must be repeated until an adequate grade is achieved. Majors will not be permitted to take any upper division class in the major on a credit/non-credit basis.
The Interpersonal and Organizational Communication Option is designed for students who wish to prepare themselves for careers in public and private industries requiring well developed communication skills and a knowledge of interpersonal and organizational behavior. Students choosing this option will study the theoretical and applied aspects of interpersonal and organizational communication as they function in personal and/or professional relationships.

The Communication, Culture, and Public Affairs Option is designed for students who wish to study the cultural, mass-mediated, and political dimensions of public communication. In this option, students are exposed to course work in multi-cultural communication, performance studies, persuasion, and popular, political and media rhetoric.

The Minor in Speech Communication is available to any non-Communication Studies major. A minimum of 21 units in Communication Studies is required, of which at least 15 must be upper division, chosen in consultation with the Department Undergraduate Advisor.
