FTP Access in Windows

DO NOT USE THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW UNTIL YOU READ THE FOLLOWING CAMPUS INFORMATION SECURITY WARNING:

YOUR WEB ACCOUNT WILL INCLUDE A FOLDER CALLED "HTDOCS". NEVER PLACE DOCUMENTS OR FILES CONTAINING ANY UNIVERSITY, EMPLOYEE, OR STUDENT CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION IN THE HTDOCS FOLDER.
Anything you place in the htdocs folder can be viewed by anyone visiting your website! Contact the Information Security Management and Compliance Office at (562) 985-4862 with questions about your information security management and compliance responsibilities.


  1. Open 'My Computer' from the Start Menu on the lower left-hand side of your screen.

  2. Once in 'My Computer', please make sure the Address Bar is viewable (located on the upper part of the 'My Computer' window). If you can see the address bar at this point, skip to Step 5.
  3. If you cannot see the Address Bar click the 'View Menu', and then 'Toolbars', click on Address bar if there is not a "check mark" next to it.

  4. If there is already is a check mark, look at the toolbars in the window, you should see the word 'Address' in grey text. Right-click on 'Address' and click "Lock toolbars" so that there is no check mark beside "Lock toolbars." There should be some empty space, click and drag the word 'Address' to that you can see the text area where you can type an address.

  5. In the address bar type "ftp://ftp.csulb.edu/" or "ftp://username@ftp.csulb.edu" (where username is your username - i.e. jsmith). Press Enter.
    Type the address ftp://username@ftp.csulb.edu

  6. When the "Login As" dialog box appears, type your username and password
    Click "Log On".
    • If this dialog box does not appear, click on File > Login As

  7. After logging in you will see a folder named htdocs.
    Read the following htdocs information security warning carefully:

    NEVER PLACE DOCUMENTS OR FILES CONTAINING ANY UNIVERSITY, EMPLOYEE, OR STUDENT CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION IN THE HTDOCS FOLDER. Anything you place in the htdocs folder can be viewed by anyone visiting your website! Contact the Information Security Management and Compliance Office at (562) 985-4862 with questions about your information security management and compliance responsibilities.

    Double-click the htdocs folder to open it.

  8. After opening the htdocs folder, you can drag and drop the files you want to upload to your webspace.
    Important: Your homepage must be named index.html (lowercase); or index.php (lowercase).
    This file is displayed when a user goes to http://www.csulb.edu/~username/ (where username is your username - i.e. jsmith)

After completing step 6, open a web browser, and type in http://www.csulb.edu/~username/ (where username is your username)
then hit the enter key in order to make sure the page loads and functions as expected.

You may also upload other documents in the htdocs folder, such as Word, Excel or PDF documents. To download a Word, Excel, PDF or other non-HTML file, type in the URL: "http://www.csulb.edu/~username/example.doc" (where example.doc is the name of the document uploaded to your webspace).
