Preferences

The Preferences tool allows you to change your personal settings, including font and text size, to customize the system's display. You will most likely be using this tool just to set your desired font and text size, and create your email signature.

Accessing the Preferences Tool

Preferences link in My Settings

  1. From My Home, click the Preferences link in the My Settings widget.
  2. Use the tabs across the top of the page to view and edit different setting options.

Appearance & Accessibility

  • Font Face   - sets which font face (Verdana, Times, etc.) you want to use for standard text throughout BeachBoard.
  • Font Size - sets how large you want standard text to be throughout BeachBoard.

The next three sections deal primarily with settings for those using assistive technology:

  • Dialog Setting - If you are sight-impaired and using assistive technology such as a screen reader, we strongly recommend showing secondary windows as pop-ups. This setting helps screen readers and other assistive technologies separate the content of the secondary window from the main window.
  • HTML Editor Settings - The HTML editor is used to enter text and HTML in the system. It has many additional rich text features which you may find cumbersome or difficult to navigate, particularly if you use assistive technology such as screen readers.
  • Math Display  - sets whether equations display in a Java applet or as inline MathML. Inline MathML is compatible with reading software, screen magnification, and screen reader technology. The Java applet maintains a consistent display between browsers and environments.

Note  Firefox supports the display of inline MathML. Other browsers require the Java applet to render equations.

Language & Region

  • First Day of the Week  - sets which day appears as first for the week in your calendar.
  • Time Zone - sets all dates that include times to correspond with the time zone you specify.

Discussions

  • We recommend settings these preferences from within Discussions in your courses that use Discussions. See the Discussions Help Page for more information.

Email

  • Email options: check the appropriate box if you wish to send a copy of each outgoing message to your preferred email address (as set in MyCSULB). As we are not using Desire2Learn's internal email system, you do not need to worry about including the original message in replies or saving a copy of outgoing messages to you Sent folder, or the Display Options section.
  • Email Signature: use the text box and editing tools to create an email signature that is included at the bottom of all emails you send out through BeachBoard.
