Turnitin is a plagiarism prevention service available in BeachBoard. Students submit their papers electronically, and Turnitin compares the text of those papers to the text in billions of other documents on the Internet, in papers submitted by other students around the world, and in commercial databases of journal articles and periodicals. Whenever similarities between the text in a student's paper and the text in an existing document are found, Turnitin highlights those similarities, providing an annotated document showing both the student's paper and the original source.
NOTE: GradeMark is available, and we hope to have access to PeerMark in the near future.
Tip: One cannot set up a dropbox assignment, receive paper submissions and then change or enable the dropbox settings for that assignment. The system will not recognize a Dropbox Folder that was originally set up as just a dropbox, and the settings have been modified to become a Turnitin folder after students have submitted papers.
Viewing Originality Reports
A lower percentage rating indicates that the content is original and has not been copied; a higher percentage rating indicates the content is not original and has been copied from another source.
The percentage ranges are associated with colors:
Click the colored section beside the percentage rating to view the associated Originality Report.
The Originality Report is comprised of two panes. The right pane lists all of the matching sources, including the percentage of text that matches and a link to the online content. The left pane displays the submission text using colored highlights to draw attention to the matching content.
Tip: For more detailed help with Originality Reports, click the help link in the top-right corner of the report page.
The following file types are compatible with Plagiarism Detection:
Note: If your file type is incompatible with Plagiarism Detection the Information icon displays instead of the percentage rating.
Using TII's Grademark (Online Markup) for Dropbox Submissions
Add comments, highlight text, save, and print your Online Markup report using the available tools in the menu bar. You can view a summary of the submission at the top of the page, including the total word count, submission date, and Originality Report rating.
Tip: For more detailed help with Online Markup functionality, click the Help menu item on the report.
Note: GradeMark features such as Marks, QuickMarks, Comments, Voice Comments and Rubrics do not transfer over to BeachBoard (D2L)
The following file types are compatible with Online Markup:
Note: If your file type is incompatible with Online Markup the Information icon displays instead of the Markup icon.
