Elliot Deutsch’s Big Band plays “Vintage Masters of Swing”

Alumnus Elliot Deutsch got a great review in the International Review of Music for his show at the Catalina’s Jazz Club. Elliot’s Big Band was the house band for the “Vintage Masters of Swing” event, a who’s who of jazz greats including  arranger Van Alexander,  Patrick Williams, Sammy Nestico, and  Ralph Carmichael. Elliot was characterized as, ” a bright young bandleader whose big band has been turning heads lately.”

Jeff Hamilton Gives Masterclass

Jazz Legend Jeff Hamilton gave a master class at the Bob Cole Conservatory on November 26. Hamilton has performed with his trio, Woody Herman, Diana Krall, Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, the Clayton Brothers, and is co-leader of the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. The Los Angeles Jazz Society named him and John Clayton musicians of the year for 2006.

Leeav Sofer Profiled in the LA Times

Alumnus Leeav Sofer, co-director of Colburn Wesley Project singers was profiled in the LA Times. The choir is comprised of homeless men and women living on skid row.

Leeav and Linda Evans have been working with the choir through the Colburn School, “There’s something there that no other choir has, which is the fact they want it so much more,” Leeav said of the choir. The choir gave its first performance at the City Club on the 51st floor of a downtown skyscraper wearing black evening-wear donated by a film financier.

Faculty Perform on Multi-Grammy-Nominated Album

Adjuncts Sal Lozano, Jay Mason, Brad Dutz, and Dan Fornero performed on “Life In The Bubble,” Gordon Goodwin, composer (Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band) which received a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition and “Get Smart,” Gordon Goodwin, arranger (Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band) which received a Grammy nomination for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella, and “Party Rockers,” Gordon Goodwin, which received a Grammy nomination for  Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals.

Bluesettes at Disneyland

The Bluesettes (alumni Katrina Kochevar, Miko Shudo, Rachel St. Marseille) performed first Disneyland gig at the Fantasy Fair Stage in early July.

They also performed recently at an  Irvine Concert In The Park, with the Swing Cats Big Band on the Queen Mary and at the the Nixon Library.
