Huge Wins at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival

CJO and PST competed at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival on Sunday, March 30. Alumnus Justin Padilla’s Oak Middle School Big Band was also one of the finalists invited to compete.

Three BCCM students were named Outstanding Soloists at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival 2014: Jenny Swoish, Maria Shafer, and Ramsey Castaneda (that’s one half of the total number of Outstanding Soloists!).

Concert Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Jeff Jarvis, finished second in a highly competitive College Big Band Division.

Pacific Standard Time, under the direction of Christine Guter, won the College Vocal Jazz Division and will perform at the 57th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September.

Jazz at the Beach at Monterey Next Gen

Cellists at Los Angeles Violoncello Society

Cellos students of David Garrett — James Clark, Anthoni Polcari, Josie Boyer, Michelle Tambash, Sydney Moss, and Jeff Westcott — performed ensemble pieces by Handel, Humperdinck, and Led Zeppelin as part of the Los Angeles Violoncello Society’s annual ensemble concert.

Alumni Dawn Seward, Chris McCarthy, Lucy Cahuantzi, and Claire Mehm also performed on the program.

Stephen Salts Awarded Fulbright to UK

A HUGE congratulations goes to Stephen Salts (MM Choral Conducting) who has been awarded a Fulbright to study in the UK. He is completing his MM in Choral Conducting this May. From September 2014 to July 2015, Stephen will represent the United States as a cultural ambassador in London, England.

While researching the English choral tradition, he will be earning a second Masters degree in music at Royal Holloway, University of London where he will study with celebrated conductor, Rupert Gough.

Sean Dunnahoe who earned his BM (composition) and MA (musicology) at BCCM is working on his doctorate at Royal Holloway.

Newfangled Four in Workshop and Northern Union Collegiate Choral Festival

The defending International Barbershop Quartet Champions, the Newfangled Four with BCCM students Jake Tickner and Jackson Niebrugge, worked with young singers from ten schools at the fourth annual Youth in Harmony Festival in Santa Maria.

The following weekend they were featured at the 10th annual Great Northern Union Collegiate Men’s Choral Festival in Minneapolis. The shared the stage with the Wartburg College Ritterchor, and the St. Olaf College Viking Chorus.

Maria Shafer Finalist in International Jazz Vocal Competition

Maria Shafer is one of only two Americans among 20 international vocal finalists in a jazz competition in Latvia. The Riga Jazz Stage 2014 takes place April 2-6 in Riga, Latvia, the European Capital of Culture for 2014. The judges are Raimonds Pauls (Latvian composer), Magnus Palmquist (artistic director of Stockholm Jazz Festival), China Moses (American jazz singer) among many others.
