Whiplash Nominated for Best Picture

Little did we know that when Jazz Studies was contacted by a Hollywood casting agency in the summer of 2013 to hire extras for a feature film about college jazz bands that “Whiplash” would go on to be nominated for an Oscar as Best Picture.

Drew Ninmer, Jason Fabus, Taylor Smith, Patrick Lenertz, and Gary Soland appeared and are credited as members of the conservatory jazz orchestra in the film, which focuses on a drummer in as he struggles to impress a merciless teacher. “Whiplash” received a total of five Oscar nominations; J.K. Simmons, who won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the teacher, is nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Beth Peregrine Performs with LA Master Chorale

Beth Peregrine performed with the LA Master Chorale in the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. LA Time critic Mark Swed wrote of the performance, “Gershon conducted his Master Chorale in Morten Lauridsen’s beautiful “O Magnum Mysterium,” sung from the lip of the extended stage without microphones. It sounded fabulous, each voice having a tactile presence.”

Jeff DeSeriere Appointed to Faculty at Orange County School of the Arts

MM Conducting student Jeff DeSeriere has been appointed as the new Symphonic Band conductor at the Orange County School of the Arts.

OCSA send out a new release to their Frederick Fennell Wind Studies Program Families which read, ”I am excited to inform you that we have hired a new Clarinet/Chamber Music teacher, Ms. Alana Miles, and a new Symphonic Band conductor, Mr. Jeffrey de Seriere. Both outstanding educators come to OCSA with an impressive background and exciting energy! We are very lucky to be adding Ms. Miles and Mr. de Seriere to our Wind Studies Program staff and I look forward to their wonderful work with our students. Please join me in welcoming Ms. Miles and Mr. de Seriere to the OCSA family!”

OSCA, a 7th–12th grade public charter school, has been consistently recognized as a US News’ “Best High Schools” program. 99% of its graduates attend college. (In the summer of 2012, the name of the school was changed from OCHSA (Orange County High School of the Arts) to OCSA (Orange County School of the Arts).)

CSULB Students Present Papers at Local AMS

Three current Musicology MA students (Kerry Brunson, Marc Lombardino, Steven Ottomanyí) and one Musicology MA alumnus (Robert Wahl) were selected to present their research at the fall meeting of the Pacific Southwest Chapter of the American Musicological Society to be held on Oct. 11 at UC Irvine.

These represent one half of all papers to be presented that day.
