Edward Nelson Wins 2nd in International Voice Competition

Edward Nelson took the Drs. Michelina Fato and Carl Snyderman Second Prize in the Mildred Miller International Voice Competition. The competition took place in Pittsburgh. In addition to a monetary award, Eddie won the opportunity to sing a leading operatic role in Opera Theater of Pittsbugrh’s Summerfest 2105, which will take place at the 20th Century Club through the month of July.

Two Alumni in 6th Adolphe Sax International Competition

Yi Chen (BM 2009) and John Hallberg (BM 2010) will compete in the 6th Adolphe Sax International Competition in Dinant, Belgium on October 30 & 31st respectively. The first taped round selected 110 competitors from around the world, only 11 of whom were Americans. The competition will be live-streamed.

Newfangled Four Make Semi Finals in First Pro International Competition

The Newfangled Four Barbershop Quartet, with recent graduates Jake Tickner and Jackson Niebrugge, won the International Collegiate Barbershop competition last year. This year, their first in the professional category, saw them reach the semi finals and place 16th.

A huge congratulations to them for qualifying, passing through the quarterfinals, and having a great showing in the semifinals in their first professional competition. The competition took place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and was webcast worldwide

Maria Shafer Finalist in International Jazz Vocal Competition

Maria Shafer is one of only two Americans among 20 international vocal finalists in a jazz competition in Latvia. The Riga Jazz Stage 2014 takes place April 2-6 in Riga, Latvia, the European Capital of Culture for 2014. The judges are Raimonds Pauls (Latvian composer), Magnus Palmquist (artistic director of Stockholm Jazz Festival), China Moses (American jazz singer) among many others.

Marina Harris Wins George London-Leonie Rysanek Award

Alumna Marina Harris won the George London-Leonie Rysanek Award in New York last weekend. The George London Foundation holds one of the oldest vocal competitions in the United States and Canada, offering among the most substantial awards to outstanding North American opera singers.
In 2014 there were 5 top awards of $10,000 each.  Former George London winners include Renee Fleming, Shigemi Matsumoto, Eric Owens, and Dawn Upshaw.
