Daily 49er Features Steel Drum Orchestra in Panomundo

The BCCM Steel Drum Orchestra was recently filed for a documentary called Panomundo, a history of the steel drum. CSULB is the only US representative in the film. The Daily 49er published a feature article on the October Concert and the process of filming. The photo is courtesy of Kim Long Vo, an alumni of the percussion program.

Dr. Dave Gerhart discovered documentary project through social networking, and was invited to join the project after sharing a video of his orchestra with the filmmakers.

Simon Barrad as Owen Wingrave

Alumnus Simon Barrad was interviewed for CCM publications regarding his role in Benjamin Britten’s opera Owen Wingrave. Simon Barrad is a first year master’s student and shares the double-cast title role with an artist’s diploma student.

Simon said, ““It gives me a chance to look at how someone else interprets the role and gives me someone else to bounce ideas off of. However, we are choosing to play Owen in different ways and finding the things about the character that resonate with us personally,” says Barrad on being double cast. “Owen, as much as he fights it, is very much a Wingrave in his resolve and his courage under fire. He is emotional and passionate about his peaceful beliefs and not at all concerned with the pragmatism of his ideas. I believe the only thing keeping him from leaving the Wingrave family without a word is fear of isolation and even more specifically loneliness — a complete starvation from lack of love.”

This production also features alumni Tyler Alessi and Jessie Shulman in Simon’s cast. Our own Johannes Mueller-Stosch serves as guest conductor.
