Jonathan Talberg Conducts 80th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Bach Festival

Dr. Jonathan Talberg presided over the 80th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Bach Festival, conducting two concerts. The 80th Anniversary Party began with a free Prism Concert with lasers, LED lights, and performers from Bach’s Circle, the FCCLA Cathedral Singers, guest artists Moni Simeonov, E. Scott Levin, and Christoph Bull.  The Cathedral Choir was accompanied by the Bach Festival Orchestra in a performance or the Magnificat during the 11 AM worship service. Soloists included CSULB alumni Ashley Seaton and Amy Joy Stephens, and current students Landon Shaw and Angel Yu.

Raymond Torres-Santos records CD as Jazz Pianist

Raymond Torres-Santos recorded a CD as a jazz pianist this past summer. The CD, “Antillano,” was mastered by Bernie Grundman, and includes 13 tracks and 20 musicians. The recording showcases the musical richness found in Puerto Rican music (aguinaldo, mapeyé, danza, mazurka, bomba, salsa, bolero), the Caribbean world (merengue, reggae, calypso, soca, songo) and South America (samba). They are seen through the lenses of classical (symphonic), jazz (straight ahead and smooth) and other contemporary genres (fusion, rock, funk, R&B and ballad).

Alicia Doyle Chairs AMS Conference

Alicia Doyle (musicology), as president of the Pacific Southwest Chapter of the American Musicological Society, organized a conference hosted at Chapman University.  Scholars from northern and southern California gave papers on diverse topics ranging from chant to Babbitt to the “Sonic Fiction” of Philip K. Dick.

Hermes Camacho at Austin Soundwaves

Alumnus Hermes Camacho is on the faculty at Austin Soundwaves where he conducts the wind ensemble, teaches violin, and coordinates the theory program. Ottomanyi has Anthem Published

Steven Ottomanyi will have his anthem “Finished the Strife of Battle Now” for SATB choir and handbells published by Cantica Nova Publications. He also presented a paper entitled “La Música del Cel, les Veus dels Àngels: The Mission Choir and Orchestra” at the local PSC-AMS conference held at Chapman University.
