Dave Gerhart signs as Remo Artist

Dr. Dave Gerhart has been signed as a Remo Drum Head Artist. Their artists include Stewart Copeland (film composer and The Police), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Jim Babor (LA Philharmonic).

Jimmy Emerzian on the Tonight Show

Alumnus and Adjunct jazz instructor Jimmy Emerzian backed up singer Matthew Morrison on the Tonight show on June 11. This performance is part of a publicity tour which included performances on the Today Show and The View and at the legendary Friar’s Club. Jimmy travels to Europe with Matthew Morrison later this month.

Alumnus Brigham Welch to Record CD of Works for Viola and Piano

Alumnus Brigham Welch has a Kickstarter campaign, this to record an album of works for viola and piano. The CD will have pop, classical, and original compositions. After completing his BM at CSULB, Brigham attended the Boston Conservatory of Music, where he earned a Masters in Music Education Degree and Masters in Viola Performance.

Hardy and Welch have recorded two previous CDs, “The Spirit of God,” a collection of hymns, and “The Spirit of Christmas,” a compilation of Christmas favorites.

Waco Symphony to Perform Early Light

The Waco Symphony 2013-14 season will include a performance of Carolyn Bremer’s Early Light. The work will be featured on a program honoring the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. The Waco Symphony previously performed the work in 2006.

Joe Gray to Record Ceclia McDowell’s Trumpet Music

Alumnus Joe Gray (BM 2007) has initiated a Kickstarter project to record the trumpet music of Ceclia McDowell. Joe completed his Master’s at the University of New Mexico and is currently in the DMA program at University of Wisconsin Madison where he is a Bolz Fellowship recipient and assistant for the studio of John Aley.

Joe has performed with the New Mexico and Madison Symphonies and held the position of Principal Trumpet with Opera Southwest. He currently plays 2nd trumpet with the newly formed Madison Repertory Orchestra and is on faculty at Falls Baptist College in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Some of Joe’s performances can be heard on the Naxos label and have been featured on the nationally syndicated radio program “Performance Today”. Joe has also been involved in the drum corps activity for over 17 years. He was a member of the Velvet Knights and Blue Devils and served as brass instructor for the Blue Devils and the Academy, as well as brass caption head for the Esperanza Drum and Bugle Corps of San Diego, CA.

Adriana Verdie CD Released

Cellist Darrett Adkins recorded Dr. Adriana Verdie’s work Jira (Yira) che (‘k) Tango  for solo cello.  The CD, entitled Hypersuite, has been released by Oberlin Music. Other composers on the CD include Elliott Carter, Roger Sessions, and Osvaldo Golijov.

Mr. Adkins has performed premieres at Alice Tully Hall, the Aspen Music Festival and has performed standard concertos with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Tokyo Philharmonic, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, Tochio Soloisten, Seoul’s Prime Orchestra, Cleveland’s Red {an orchestra}, the North Carolina and New Hampshire Symphony Orchestras. In the summer of 2002, Adkins was the ‘Cellist of Honor’ at the Rio de Janeiro International Cello Encounter, where he gave master classes, recitals and concerto performances.

Alumnus Joshua Simonds named Executive Director of Chicago Youth Orchestra

Alumnus Joshua Simonds (BM percussion), formerly Executive Director of the DC Youth Orchestra Program, has been named  Executive Director of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO). Joshua worked with CYSO for nine years prior to moving to Washington DC. During his tenure previous in Chicago,  CYSO received an impressive seven ASCAP awards for Adventurous Programming

Mr. Simonds currently sits on the Youth Orchestra Division Board of the League of American Orchestras. He holds a Masters of Arts in arts management from American University.
