Alumna Cynthia Gerhart and Dr. Dave Gerhart, Area Director of Percussion, are pleased to announce the birth of their son Zachary Andrew Gerhart. Zach was born on October 17. The whole family, including older brother Drew, are doing well.

Alicia Doyle reelected AMS Chapter president
Alicia Doyle, musicology faculty, has been elected into a second term as the president of the Pacific Southwest Chapter of the American Musicological Society. Â She held the first chapter meeting of her second term on October 6 at Occidental College. Â Scholars from the chapter boundaries (Northern Arizona, Southern Nevada, California, Hawaii, and the Pacific Islands) were in attendance.
Althea Waites and Celebration: Music of American Composers
Althea Waites most recent CD, Celebration: Music of American Composers has been released. It contains works by John W. Work, Margaret Meier, Duke Ellington, Jeremiah Evans, and Curt Cacioppo. Many of our faculty and staff assisted with the production including Matt Pogue, Mark Uranker, Rychard Cooper, and alumnus David Goyette.
Anthony Moreno wins the MET district audition
Baritone Anthony Moreno won the MET district audition. This is a huge accomplishment! Congratulations, Anthony.
Next for Anthony is the regional competition on November 4 at Zipper Hall.
Alexandra Roderick (MM opera) was given an Encouragement Award. BCCM has a history of students faring well in the MET auditions. Most recently, Nathan Stark sang in the Western Regionals and Marina Harris won the 2nd prize overall in the Regionals. Both are enjoying professional operatic careers.

Althea Waites and the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation
Pianist Althea Waites was one of eight guest artists who participated in a concert celebrating the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. The event was sponsored by MUSIC UNTOLD, a Long Beach cultural organization which focuses on diversity in the arts via new music, concerts, film, community outreach programs, and theater presentations. The September 22 concert featured music from the Civil War era, pieces by African-American composers, and other works from the opera repertoire. KUSC will broadcast the concert, date TBA. Ms. Waites also premiered a work on her September 23 FAS recital by Curt Cacioppo, whose music is featured on her new album, “Celebration: Music of American Composers,” scheduled to be released on October 15.
