The Kaleidoscope Brass Quintet

The Kaleidoscope Brass Quintet performed for the Long Beach Auxiliary of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at their annual Spring Gala. They were treated to a performance by Los Angeles Philharmonic trombonist James Miller and his accompanist Yoko Mizuno. Pictured are the quintet members with James Miller and Yoko Mizuno. Brandon Faber and Katherine FIndlay also attended and helped by passing out programs, and mingling with those in attendance. We hope this launches a more active and fruitful relationship between BCCM and The LA Phil.

Yamaha Visit


James Barrera’s sax students visited the Yamaha Atelier this afternoon. They are pictured here with Yamaha Winds Product Manager Jon Goldman. The students had great discussions about product design, the music industry, and general instrument discussions. Yamaha will bring a team over visit with the Brass students next week.

Alumni News

Alumnae Marina Harris is singing a recital for the Brava! Opera Theater in Medford, OR, this weekend.

Alumnus Nathan Stark has been announced as Commendatore in Don Giovanni with the Madison Opera next season April 26 and 28, 2013.

Alumnus Paul Sandberg was booked for another production of Titanic! He will be playing Andrews the Architect at the Ocean Professional theater in New Jersey this July.

Alumnae Courtney Gasque will be a musician/actor for the LA Phil SummerSounds show.

Coleachella News

Coleachella, our extravaganza of current students and alumni rock/jazz/alt bands on Friday, August 31, 2012, now has interest from 16 bands! It is shaping up to be a fun afternoon/evening of visiting with friends, hearing great music, helping our student organizations, and bringing together BCCM students and alumni.

Please save the date and come if you can. The concert–marathon–is free. Best guess is that we’ll start at 4:00 and run into the late evening.

 

Jazz Vocalist Cooking as a Pro

After graduation from CSULB with a BM in performance, jazz vocalist Amy Aguilera Chicavich auditioned for the military and won a spot performing with the prestigious Heritage of America Band (stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia). She performed for troops stationed around the world, including performances at active bases in Afghanistan and Iraq.

When her tour of duty was complete, she and her husband moved to New York to continue their educations. Amy is now studying at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in the Bachelor of Professional Studies program, training in Culinary Arts Management. She is featured on the CIA’s website in a wonderful article about her experience in the military and how that has translated to her life as a student at CIA.

Food and music have always gone together well. The Bob Cole Conservatory of Music has some excellent cooks on faculty and several of our alumni are working as caterers and personal chefs. We are proud of Amy’s choice to study at the CIA and wish her all the best.

Coleachella

Alumni, students, faculty, and staff are invited to “Coleachella,” an extravaganza featuring alumni and current students’ rock/jazz/alt bands on Friday, August 31, 2012 in Daniel Recital Hall. The concert is free; student organizations will sell food and drinks in the lobby with all proceeds going directly to those organizations (SAI, Phi Mu Alpha, ACDA, Comp Guild, etc).

If you’re a current student or an alum in a band who’d like to perform, please let me know by email carolyn.bremer@csulb.edu. I’d like to hear from you by May 1st, if possible. I already have seven groups lined up (and a special treat which I’ll just say is a band called “Lead Sister” and they might play some tunes familiar to us all). It could be a bit of a marathon; my best guess is that I can slot 30 or 45-minute sets. The start time will depend on how many sets we have.

If you’re in the area, please try to come for all or part of Coleachella. Meet our current students, introduce yourself to the new Freshmen, see old friends, and hear some great music. Wander between the hall muisc and the lobby for food and drink (or, if you’re in the mood for something alcoholic, you can step back in time at Pizza Mania). The construction will be very close to completion so you’ll get a sneak peak through the fences at the fabulous new entrance, amphitheater and pavilion.

The Marriage of Figaro


The Marriage of Figaro opens Friday night and runs through the weekend. Performances are Friday, April 20 at 8:00p, Saturday, April 21 at 2:00p and 8:00p, and Sunday April 22 at 2:00p in the University Theater. Tickets are $25/$15.

It is a great production with two amazing casts. Come see it twice!

 

Music Resource Center Update

Music Resource Center

The Music Resource Center received a much-needed update this week with the addition of comfortable study spaces. We added two lounge areas with comfy chairs just in time to write term papers and study for finals. WiFi access is available and we’ll be installing power strips for laptops in all areas.

Alumnus Trumpeter in the News

Kyle Spraker

Kyle Spraker (BM) completed a Master’s degree at the New England Conservatory of Music (2010).  Kyle is a member of the Redline Brass Quintet , the Boston Philharmonic (Benjamin Zander, director) and is principal trumpet with the Discovery Ensemble chamber orchestra in Boston.

His recent performance on Beethoven’s Leonore Overture with Discovery Ensemble at Jordan Hall in Boston garnered this review: “Kyle Spraker’s offstage trumpet solo seemed utterly assured and created just the right foil to the dramatic events unfurling onstage. It is hard to imagine a more convincing performance of this work.”
