Jay Mason attended California State University, Long Beach, playing lead alto and soprano saxophone in it's top-rated wind ensemble. He was also a featured member of the school's jazz ensemble and orchestra. In 1981 he was a featured soloist at the North American Saxophone Alliance national convention, and in 1983 a saxophone quartet in which he played soprano saxophone were finalists in the national Coleman Competition for Small Ensembles.

After graduating from CSULB with a B.A. in Music, Jay began his freelance career in Southern California. His performance credits include performances with The Rockettes, Barry White, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Michael Feinstein, Suzanne Somers, Maureen McGovern, Kenny Rogers, Scott Record, Joel Gray, Jerry Seinfeld, Bob Newhart, Bob Hope, Donny Osmond, Johnny Mathis, Tom Harrell, Don Rickles, Cirque Du Soliel, and many others.

Jay is a member of Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, and also appears regularly with many other Southern California bands including Bill Watrous, The Bill Elliot Swing Orchestra, Doug MacDonald, Tom Kubis, and others. He has been a member of the Long Beach Municipal Band for seven seasons and the Walt Disney Distinguished Service Awards Orchestra for the past 3 years. Previously he was a member of the Disneyland Band, and has performed with the Pacfic Symphony and the Desert Symphony.

He is active in the Southern California musical theatre scene, performing at venues such as the South Coast Repertory Theatre, La Mirada Civic Theatre, Orange County Performing Arts Center, and the Ahmanson Theatre. Shows have included productions of Company, Kiss Me Kate, The Full Monty, Cinderella, A Chorus Line, Sunday in the Park With George, and Chicago, to name a few.

Jay has recorded with John Lithgow, The Letterman, Tom Kubis, Bill Eliot, Greg Dawson, Mary Beth Carlson, Indigo Swing, Alan Jackson, and more. Soundtracks for motion pictures and televsion include The Paper, Aladdin, King of Thieves, Forest Warrior, Nixon, Cats Don't Dance, Killer, Psycho Surf Babe (independent film award), Sweetwater, Mango Kiss, The Howie Mandel Show, Tower of Terror, Alley Cats Strike, Child Star: The Shirley Temple Story, Femme Fatales & Ingenues on A&E, Belles' Magical Stories, Dragon Tales, The Dorothy Dandridge Story, and The Gilmore Girls.

He is active in music education, serving on the faculties of CSULB, Long Beach City College, and as an artist/clinician at schools such as CSU Fresno, Irvine, and El Toro High Schools, Red Rocks High School, Mesa, AZ and Carroll County High School in Southlake, TX.
