Directed by Gregory Maldonado, Collegium Musicum offers an exploration of instrumental and vocal music from the late Renaissance (circa 1585) through the High Baroque (circa 1750) and Classical periods (circa 1800).
Repertoire for the class includes broken consort music from the late Renaissance (Giovanni Gabrieli, Michael Praetorius), early seventeenth-century string music (Biagio Marini, Carlo Fontana, Dario Castello), early seventeenth century monody and operatic scenes (Claudio Monteverdi, Giulio and Francesca Caccini, Barbara Strozzi), mid to late seventeenth-century German string chamber music (Heinrich Schmelzer, H.I.F. Biber, Georg Muffat, Dietrich Buxtehude, Joann Pachelbel), mid to late seventeenth-century Italian vocal music (Francesco Cavalli, Antonio Cesti), late seventeenth to mid eighteenth-century English and French cantatas, odes, and chamber music (Henry Purcell, Louis Nicholas Clerambault, Joseph de Mondonville, François Couperin le grand, Jean Philippe Rameau), and chamber (wind and string) and vocal music from the High Baroque (J.S. Bach,Georg Frideric Handel, Antonio Vivaldi, Georg Philipp Telemann, Jean-Marie Leclair), as well as Rococo and Classical instrumental and vocal works for small ensembles.
Through rehearsals and performances, students will learn appropriate historical styles of performance practice. Issues such as instrumental development, nationalistic performance styles (i.e., Italian, French, German, English), different performing editions, sound production, articulation, metrical hierarchy and accentuation, ornamentation and reading of movable clefs will be covered.
Each semester will culminate in a group concert performance.
