Mission Statement of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music

The Bob Cole Conservatory of Music offers a comprehensive program with a performance-orientation which seeks to educate students to carry on the vital traditions of our diverse musical cultures through creative performance, education, composition, scholarship and community service. Its faculty strives to produce students who share the excitement of music as an art, who possess the wisdom to appreciate and the courage to defend the highest artistic ideals, and who bring, with skill and dedication, the finest in music to the people in their communities.

Goals

  1. To train students who are able to perform at a professional level, successfully compete in the professional fields of music and who are prepared for advanced collegiate study in music
  2. To provide for the development of music educators who will perpetuate the finest musical traditions in a highly diverse community
  3. To foster intellectual as well as creative expressions through research and musical scholarship
  4. To educate general students in ways which enrich, enlighten and encourage the development of their musical expression and appreciation
  5. To produce concerts and other musical events of the highest quality for CSULB and the greater Long Beach communities
  6. To provide an environment which encourages and supports faculty development through research and creative activity
  7. To assist in the cultivation of arts audiences of the future

Objectives

  1. To increase undergraduate and graduate enrollments to levels determined in 1996 planning process
  2. To improve overall performance quality of incoming students through recruiting and higher audition standards
  3. To revise the Bachelor of Arts degree so that it better serves the needs of our highly diverse student population and conforms to NASM standards
  4. To increase the visibility and influence of the department in the community
  5. To establish a heightened development effort in support of the Opera Institute – including fund-raising for a new Opera House in the music complex, 16 opera scholarships and an endowed chair in Opera Studies for a Director.
