Singing Bowls

Join us for our beginning-of-the-semester Singing Bowl concert on the stage of DRH. You’ll be surrounded by players for an immersive, meditative experience and then have a chance to play the bowls yourself. The concert is suitable for anyone who enjoys sitting quietly for an hour.

Wind Symphony Korea Tour Bon Voyage

The Bob Cole Wind Symphony has been invited to perform as the only ensemble from the United States at the 5th International Wind Band Festival in Seoul, Korea. The Festival features top performing soloists and ensembles from across the World. The Wind Symphony will perform with clarinet soloist Helen Good-Castro and will share the stage with trumpet soloist Joe Burgstaller, the Budapest Saxophone Quartet, the German Brass and conductor Johan de Meij. Representing the Bob Cole Conservatory in South Korea is a great honor.

In Two Worlds, the Duality of Music and Society is a multi-disciplinary presentation designed as an exciting "seamless" musical experience featuring projected visuals, interactive electronics and theatrical activities.

Representative composers include John Cage, Toru Takemitsu, Morton Subotnick, Brian Egan, Marilyn Shrude, William Bolcom and Mark Bunce. Actual composer voices are heard via recorded readings and poetry, thus bringing the composer "spiritually" into the live concert space.

Guest Artist Recital

US Army Herald Trumpets

The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets’ demonstration is a multimedia, live performance covering the history of the group since its inception in 1959. It incorporates video and audio footage of ceremonies at The White House and for nationally televised events. Individual instruments are also demonstrated. The performance culminates with music performed at the Olympics.

University Choir and Chamber Choir: A Serenade To Music

Jonathan Talberg and Olga Spriggs, directors

Presenting works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Dominic DiOrio, Hugo Wolf, and a premiere by American Composer Richard Burchard, this concert will feature two of the finest collegiate choral ensembles in the United States. The Bob Cole Chamber Choir and CSULB University Choir maintain a significant touring and recording schedule; they have been featured in performances with the Rolling Stones, the Kronos Quartet, virtually all of Southern California’s professional musical organizations and on video and film soundtracks. The concert will feature the Bob Cole Conservatory’s newest professors on the performance faculty: internationally renowned violinist Moni Simeonov and Ted Atkatz, front man for the band NYCO and former principal percussionist of the Chicago Symphony—playing Vaughan Williams and DiOrio, respectively.

University Woodwind Quintet / Conservatory Brass Quintet

The University Wind Quintet members this year are: Vanessa Fourla—flute, Spencer Klass—oboe, Sarra Hey—clarinet, Sarah Krueger—horn, Brian Tuley—bassoon. They will perform Quintet Op. 43—Carl Nielsen.

The University Brass Quintet Members are: Harry Ostrander & Evan Walsh—trumpets, Christian Siqueiros—horn, Tyler McGeough—trombone, Prichard Pearce III—tuba. Their program includes Fanfare to La Peri—Paul Dukas, Scherzo—John Cheetham, Quintet—Malcolm Arnold, Madrigals—Claudio Monteverdi, Sonatine—Eugene Bozza, and That’s a Plenty—arranged by Jack Gale.

Faculty Artist Recital

John Barcellona, flute

The program will feature two of the greatest flute sonatas composed, by J.S.Bach and Cesar Franck. Featured will be a piece for flute and narrator entitled The Emperor and the Bird of Paradise, narrated by Barcellona’s ventriloquist brother Mike, and his side kick, Monti. Included in the performance is a premiere of Barcellona’s composition for Native American flutes and electronics, entitled Cuculi—The Peruvian Dove. A very evocative composition for flute and piano, Orange Dawn, by flutist/composer Ian Clarke, will also be performed, with powerpoint pictures of dawn at the Great Rift Valley of East Africa.

Winter Festival Concert

More than 200 singers ring in the holidays with favorite carols, songs, and classical works in Long Beach’s greatest Winter extravaganza. Set in the historic sanctuary of First Congregational Church of Long Beach, this traditional concert has thrilled audiences for three decades! Enjoy the majesty of the great Moeller organ, handbells, vocal jazz, and, of course the combined voices of all seven CSULB choirs!
