DEGREE OPTIONS IN FILM AND ELECTRONIC ARTS

• Bachelor of Arts degree: Option in Theory and Practice of Cinema

Students in this option attain a foundational education in the history and theory of media, and choose one of seven tracks to acquire specialized training: 1) critical practice; 2) documentary production; 3) screenwriting; 4) editing; 5) audio; 6) broadcast production; or 7) production management.

• Bachelor of Arts degree: Option in Narrative Production

Students in this option receive intensive instruction in cinema production, with specialized tracks in narrative production and cinematography. Enrollment is limited. For admission to this option, applicants must receive a positive recommendation from faculty after a portfolio review.

A total of 21 units (seven courses) are required for the minor.

HOW TO APPLY - Major-Specific Admissions Requirements

Incoming freshmen

Incoming freshmen interested in Film and Electronic Arts are admitted as "Pre-Film and Electronic Arts." There is no portfolio requirement for incoming freshman applicants.

During their first few semesters at CSULB, students should complete lower-division general education requirements as well as the lower-division FEA courses. Continuation in the major is subject to meeting specific lower-division course and GPA requirements at CSULB that indicate the student's ability to succeed and complete the major.

Current CSULB students

To be considered for admission to the FEA major, applicants must demonstrate the following:

• Minimum Cumulative GPA: 2.5
• Minimum lower-division preparation courses or articulated equivalents with a minimum 3.0 GPA and each with a minimum grade of "C"
  • ART 110 - Introduction to the Visual Arts or AH 111B - Foundation Art History II
  • FEA 205 - Film History or FEA 206 History of Broadcasting
  • FEA 299 - Media Aesthetics
• Required General Education foundation courses with a minimum grade of "C":
  • Written Communication
  • Oral Communication
  • Critical Thinking
  • Mathematics

Applicants to the Option in Narrative Production must also receive a positive recommendation from faculty following review of a portfolio submitted by the applicant.

There is no portfolio required for admission into the Option in Theory and Practice of Cinema.

Incoming transfer students

In addition to the University admissions requirements, applicants must demonstrate the following:

• Minimum Cumulative GPA: 2.5
• Minimum lower division preparation courses or articulated equivalents a minimum grade of "C"
  • ART 110 - Introduction to the Visual Arts or AH 111B - Foundation Art History II
• Required General Education foundation courses with a minimum grade of "C":
  • Written Communication
  • Oral Communication
  • Critical Thinking
  • Mathematics

Additional recommended coursework with a minimum 3.0 GPA and each with a minimum grade of "C":

• FEA 205 - Film History
• FEA 206 - History of Broadcasting
• FEA 299 - Media Aesthetics

Transfer students who do not have access to an articulated equivalent course must complete FEA 299 and FEA 205 or FEA 206 during their first semester of residency at CSULB.

Applicants to the Option in Narrative Production must also receive a positive recommendation from faculty following review of a portfolio submitted by the applicant.

There is no portfolio required for admission into the Theory and Practice Option.
