Major Specific Declaration Requirements for CSULB Students:
College of Health and Human Services

CSULB students must meet precise major specific criteria in order to ‘declare a major.’ While freshmen are admitted directly into some majors, many majors require that students begin as pre-majors and then declare the major if and when they complete the major specific criteria. All students must have a declared major by the time they reach 60 earned units. This applies equally to students who are:

  • Undeclared
  • Were admitted into a ‘pre-major’ and are requesting to declare the major
  • Requesting to change major
  • Requesting to add a major

Except for “Highly Impacted” majors, native CSULB students can ‘declare a major’ if they meet the major specific minimum cumulative GPA and required lower division preparation. There are limitations on the ability to add a second major or to add/change degree objectives based on the following policies:

If a major is highly impacted it will be noted next to the name of the major and additional supplemental criteria and requirements are indicated in the major specific details. These criteria will be used for Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 consideration. They are subject to change for future terms.

Major Specific Criteria for CSULB Students

ATHLETIC TRAINING - Highly Impacted Major

To be considered for admission to the major, applicants must demonstrate the following. Applicants must submit a separate program application to the CSULB Athletic Training Education Program by February 1 for the fall semester. See the CSULB Athletic Training Education Program web site for the separate program application. The separate program application must be accompanied by three letters of recommendation; one letter must be from the athletic training setting noted below.

Minimum Cumulative GPA: 2.7

Minimum lower division preparation (grade of C or better required):

  • The following suite of major preparation courses must be completed with a minimum GPA of 2.5:
    • BIOL 207 – Human Physiology
    • BIOL 208 – Human Anatomy
    • PSY 100 – Introductory Psychology
  • Required General Education courses not covered by major preparation courses:
    • Written Communication
    • Oral Communication
    • Critical Thinking
    • Mathematics
  • Minimum of 150 pre–professional athletic training hours.
    • At least 100 hours must be attained by observation in a traditional athletic training setting under the supervision of a BOC certified athletic trainer.
    • A maximum of 50 hours may be observed in an allied clinical setting, such as sports medicine clinics. Summer sports clinics, sports performance facilities, hospital facilities, or dance performance centers

COMMUNICATIVE DISORDERS

To be considered for admission to the major, applicants must demonstrate the following:

Minimum Cumulative GPA: 3.0

Minimum lower division preparation (grade of C or better required):

  • The following suite of major preparation courses must be completed with a minimum GPA of   2.5:
    • A biology course (Human Anatomy and Physiology is recommended)
    • A physical science course (CHEM 100 – Chemistry in Today’s World; or PHSC 112 – Introduction to the Physical Sciences, are recommended)
    • A social science course (PSY 100 – Introductory Psychology; or PSY 241 – Psychobiology, are recommended)
    • A statistics course (PSY 210 – Introductory Statistics, is recommended)
  • Required General Education courses not covered by major preparation courses:
    • Written Communication

NURSING BSN BASIC - Highly Impacted Major

To be considered for admission to the major, applicants must demonstrate the following. Applicants must submit a separate program application to the School of Nursing. In reviewing applications, a personal profile is developed for each applicant based on GPA in pre–requisite courses and the General Assessment Test. The largest weight in the profile is derived from the pre–requisite science courses GPA, with typical courses being 3.25 or higher and no grades below “C.” Applicants with the highest profile scores are selected for admission. The number of applicants who can be admitted is limited by space availability. It is anticipated that about 72 students will be admitted each fall and spring from hundreds of applications.

Minimum Cumulative GPA: 3.0

Minimum lower division preparation (grade of C or better required):

  • Major preparation courses:
    • Human Anatomy Lecture and Lab – 4 semester units minimum (BIOL 208 – Human Anatomy)
    • Human Physiology Lecture and Lab – 4 semester units minimum (BIOL 207 – Human Physiology)
    • Microbiology Lecture and Lab – 4 semester units minimum (MICR 200 – General Microbiology for Health Professionals)
    • Integrated Chemistry Lecture and Lab – 5 semester units minimum (CHEM 140 – General, Organic, and Biochemistry)
  • Required General Education courses not covered by major preparation courses:
    • Written Communication
    • Oral Communication
    • Critical Thinking
    • Mathematics
  • Applicants must complete a General Assessment Test given by the School of Nursing.

To be considered for admission to the major, applicants must demonstrate the following. Applicants must submit a separate program application to the School of Nursing.

    • Chemistry – Integrated Chemistry or Organic Chemistry are Recommended (CHEM 140 – General, Organic, and Biochemistry)

  • Accredited Associate Degree in Nursing and RN License

SOCIAL WORK - Highly Impacted Major

To be considered for admission to the major, applicants must demonstrate the following. Applicants must submit a separate program application to the School of Social Work by March 1st for the upcoming fall semester. The application includes statements of biographical and educational background and a description of community and/or social work experience. In addition, each applicant must submit two letters of reference, one academic and one professional. Eligible applicants will be selected for admission on a space-available basis based on review of the entire application packet.
